58mm Filter Set fits Canon Powershot SX50 HS well
on November 18, 2012
I bought this set for my new Canon Powershot SX50 HS and find that this set of 58mm diameter bayonet adapter ring and filters all fit perfectly on the camera without any vignetting effects (the SX50 HS does not really need 67mm adapter rings and filters, although those were officially recommended in the specifications). To fit the adapter ring, it's best to put the camera on the table with lens facing up so that you can look down on it and line up the adapter ring correctly before rotating it into place. On my camera, the adapter ring stays on the lens 24/7 with a UV filter attached.
Except for the fluorescent filter which is redundant, due to the camera being able to self-correct for fluorescent lighting, the other 2 filters are usable. However, I decided not to use the UV filter supplied, as it is not coated at all - there's no point placing a sheet of plain UV glass in front of your multi-coated lens - you're really wasting all the benefits of your multi-coated optics. Instead I bought a new 58mm Hoya multi-coated UV filter for everyday use and am happy with the picture quality.
The circular polarizer is perfectly usable though, as all other circular polarizers in the market are also not multi-coated as well. You will need to use the new lens cap, as the original Canon lens cap no longer fits once you have attached the adapter ring and a filter. The lens hood fits perfectly, but I decided not to use it as well. The microfiber cloth is adequate and the velcro-lined filter pouch is convenient. Overall, for this set I find the adapter ring, circular polarizer filter, lens cap and the velcro-lined filter pouch useful.
