A reissue of "The Original Spinners" would have been better,
This review is from: Essential Collection (Audio CD)
I LOVE these Motown collections for the simple reason that the songs I love are now on crystal-clear, unblemished CD's. The Motown sound will live on forever, figuratively speaking. Just tell me why in the world would anyone having access to the Motown vaults decide to build a collection of The Spinners' Motown years and not include the entire "Original Spinners" 1967 LP? 10 songs from the original 12 song LP made it to the final cut. Am I disappointed? You bet! The Spinners were an amazing group. They had some very big hits when they left Motown to go to Atlantic Records, but their years at Motown must not be forgotten and that album truly highlights the best of their work. The album features releases from 1961 - 1967. Why leave off "It Hurts To Be In Love" and "How Can I?" Those songs were equally as fascinating as the 10 they included, plus the best of their dismal follow-up "Second Time Around" LP. The songs are presented, unfortunately, in poor sounding stereo; "Tomorrow May Never Come" (which is The Funk Brothers performing at their very best, musically, and my favorite track on the entire CD) sounds like The Spinners were placed in an echo chamber. They are hardly audible on that track. The rest of the CD is really good since most of the original album is on it, but please, Motown, if you're going to issue a collection of a group's work (like The Spinners or The Monitors or even Earl Van Dyke)and decide to use 90% of the album...PLEASE use the entire album and leave off some of the secondary filler tracks. It's a bad idea.

The Spinners have been around like forever, but they had a short period when they recorded for the Motown label and had some decent dance hits. Afterwards they made it real big. This CD highlights those Motown years 1963-65 with some great tunes such as "I'll Always Love You" and "That's What Girls are Made For"
