5.0 out of 5 stars collection of b-sides and album tracks
This is a odd collection of Duran tracks from 1981 to 1983. Tracks 1,2,4,5,and 6 are all from their debut 1981 self-titles album. Track 3 is the b-side from the 'Careless Memories' 7 inch. Track 7 is from the 1983 re-release of their bebut album. Track 8 is the b-side to the 'My Own Way' single from 1982. Tracks 10 thru 17 are the entire 'Rio' album from 1982. And...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointed
I read somewhere that this collection contained the original, extended LP version of Hungry Like the Wolf. Wrong. It's not here. It's the US CD version, which I already have. If anyone can tell me where to find that version on CD I'd be grateful. That aside, the collection is impressive as it contains lots of obscure tracks that I've never heard of. I bought it for...

And track 18 is the b-side to the 'Reflex' single, recorded live in 1982 but released in 1983. This is basically Duran's best two albums w/ some good b-sides, I'm suprised at its set up and selection, but its worth a listen

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your music collection!!, October 26, 2010

I purchased this CD about a month ago, since I was really interested in hearing other DD songs that were not included on their 1998 Greatest Hits, but other fans kept raving about on their posts. I have now added Careless Memories, Anyone Out There, Sound Of Thunder, Like An Angel, Hold Back The Rain, My Own Way, New Religion, Chauffeur, Lonely In Your Nightmare, Last Chance on the Stairway among my favorite DD songs. My only complaint was that the last track was live and the quality of the recording was not very good. I have listened to this CD almost non-stop and really glad that I bought it. I highly recommend it.

This is a FANTASTIC album that is for ONLY TRUE Duan Duran die hards. Out of the entire 18 track odyessey, only 2 songs are songs that the general public have probably NEVER HEARD before...Fame; a song that was originally done by ONE of the groups influencer's... David Bowie. Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) the last song, is a very good 'live' version of Duran Duran. I recommend this album to ANYONE who likes Duran Duran music because the tracks on this album are truly Duran Duranesque, this album has reached Gold status and really never hit the mainstream the way some of their MORE publicized albums have and still hit...(I re-iterate), GOLD. Hope this review helps. Peace.
P.S.- The extended LP version to Hungry Like The Wolf can ONLY be found on...Duran Duran Rio 2-CD Limited Edition Book & Cd set. This piece can ONLY be PURCHASED from the U.K. or Asian Countries. Hope this additional info helps as well. Peace.

This is an amazing collection of Duran Duran's best work..including the elusive cover of Make me Smile (come up and see me) a song I heard nearly 25 years ago and was so happy to find recently. If you like Duran Duran, this is the cd for you if you love Duran Duran, you already own this cd.

I bought it for 5 bucks, so I really can't complain. However, I'm still on a mission to get that extended version. I won't stop!

3.0 out of 5 stars The term "essential" may be misleading, September 10, 2010

I am huge fan of Duran Duran but I think this collection may be misleading if you are really looking to buy a collection that truly has the essential Duran Duran singles. This collection doesn't have the 3 most quintessential Duran Duran hits, namely "The Reflex", "The Wild Boys" and "A View To A Kill" and seems to cover only the songs from their first 2 albums Duran Duran and Rio (with the exception of "Is There Something I should know?" which was a single release).

"Anyone Out There" and "Sound of Thunder" from 1st album Duran Duran and "Hold Back The Rain" and "Last Chance on The Stairway" from Rio are interesting choices to include in the Essential collection as well as some of the B-Sides hits like "Like An Angel" and "Come and Make Me Smile". Don't get me wrong, these are all great songs and you can enjoy them but if you wish to build a serious collection for Duran Duran, you may be better off buying Duran Duran, Rio and Seven and The Ragged Tiger albums or if you wish to buy a greatest hits collection, you may be better of buying Greatest.

Also, if you are big enough a fan, you should consider buying Singles Box Set 1981-1985 which includes a lot of the B-sides hits which were not available on any previously released studio album; they are a great treat especially to people like me who never got to hear them because they were not released in any format in my country. They also have Singles 1986-1995 which are also great but doesn't have the same 80s sound you used to hearing on their first 3 studio albums and Arena which is their concert/concept album from 1985.
