An absolute joy to listen to. The Essential Collection is exactly that, essential. If you love music, real music from a man who loved it too then do not hesitate to order this collection.
Catch Hoagy singing Hong Kong Blues and Am I Blue in To Have and Have Not w/ Bogart and Bacall. As much fun to watch as he is easy to listen to.

If Hoagy Carmichael had never written another note, he'd still be remembered as the man who wrote "Star Dust". Fortunately for us, he wrote a great deal more, which he sang in his highly idiosyncratic and oddly endearing style. The first CD of this set presents him doing just that, with a variety of accompaniments, including Paul Whiteman (Washboard Blues), and the Casa Loma Orchestra (Little Old Lady). Exceptionally, he duets with Ella Logan on two tracks, and Dick Robertson and Anita Boyer take vocal honours on one track apiece.

The second CD is in two parts; fifteen tracks of Hoagy singing the music of others, followed by eleven of other great artists performing his songs. The latter include Louis Armstrong, Connie Boswell, Frank Sinatra, Kay Starr, Bing Crosby, and Jane Russell.

This is an excellent compilation at a truly bargain price, which should appeal to Hoagy's many admirers, and garner him some more.

Wow! Saw Hoagy for the first time in the Bogart/Bacall classic "To have and have not". Loved his songs and singing voice. What I like about this cd is that he sings alot of the songs as well as other performers singing his songs. I was amazed at all of the songs I have heard but never knew he was the songwriter. Very impressed. A great collection, hands down.

My mother used to sing some of these songs. Especially "Huggin and Chalkin'. Great CD, arrived new, fast delivery. Thank you.

If you are a true Hoagy Carmichal fan, you will love it. It has all the
oldies from my era,{the late 30's through the 40's}. Brought back a lot of
good memories--very nostalgic.
