5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION, AT A BARGAIN PRICE, November 15, 2007
This review is from: The Essential Collection (Audio CD)
This is an extremely well thought out 2-CD collection featuring guitarist Les Paul. The first CD is centred around the mid-forties, when he provided accompaniment, either singly or in a small group, to a number of the vocalists recording for Decca. Amongst them were Bing Crosby, who sings six numbers in a particularly languorous style, plus four from the Philco Radio Hour. Although not reflected in the track listing, "Hey Lolly Lolly Lo" and "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way" were recorded on 21st March 1947, and the second voice that can be heard is that of Burl Ives. They're followed by two each from Helen Forrest, the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Andrews Sisters, and Dick Haymes. Highlight of the set for me is Kay Starr, who contributes ten tracks accompanied by a small jazz group which included violinist Joe Venuti, and the final track is sung by Clancy Hayes, then vocalist with Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band. The second CD features 33 of Les Paul's own multi-tracked recordings, including those made with vocals by his wife Mary, which date from between 1950 and 1955. With a total of 158 minutes playing time this is a considerable bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, December 27, 2007
By
This review is from: The Essential Collection (Audio CD)
This cd while lacking quite the "pop" of a remastered edition, offers a tremendous amount of material not avilable in any other single offering. It has practically all of the great recordings Les Paul did, the first Cd covering Les with numerous artist and the other with Mary Ford. You will not be dissapointed with this compilation. For someone trying to the best value for your money, this is definitely it.
