Amazon.com Review

The appealing, compact, reasonably priced Essential Computers series from DK meets all of the getting-started needs of the beginning computer and Internet user, focusing exclusively on Microsoft products. With attractive French flaps and characteristically clean, easy-to-read illustrations, the books in this series--which range in subjects from getting online to digital photography--really serve the casual user. --Teri Kieffer

From Library Journal

This series of six compact handbooks focuses mainly on getting the most from the Microsoft suite of office applications. For example, the three "Internet" volumes (Browsing the Web, Building a Website, and Email) provide basic to intermediate instructions for Internet Explorer 5.0, Frontpage 2000, and Outlook Express 5.0. The "Spreadsheets" title, Creating Worksheets, deals with basic Excel 2000 functionality, while the "Word Processing" guide, Letters & Mailing, focuses on creating letters and mail-merge documents in Word 2000. The "Multimedia" volume, Digital Photography, is a comprehensive guide, covering purchase guidelines for digital cameras, taking good photographs, and manipulating digital photos on a PC. All of the titles are directed toward users of the Windows 98 operating system platform. All handbooks are intended for those with little or no experience using the applications covered. There are plenty of "screen shot" illustrations accompanying the clear, concise text, which is written in step-by-step instructional style. A handy glossary and useful index are included, rounding out an excellent series of inexpensive titles that would be welcome additions to just about any library where demand exists. DK intends to release six more guides on new topics later this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Step by step manual for a beginner, September 30, 2002
This review is from: Essential Computers: Building a Website (Paperback)
This tiny book accomplishes its task of guiding a FrontPage beginner through the steps of using the basic components of the program. Quick to read instructions are accompanied by lots of photo illustrations to show you how to insert text, tables, grahics and forms, and then explains how to publish your site to a web, (but unfortunately not how to make corrections once it's online). You can follow along on your computer to learn the basics in a very short time, but since the author has you open a new page each time you practice using one of the components, you don't get a feel for how to design and arrange a page with multiple items or how to move things around on the page. For this, and other unanswered questions, I need to get a more extensive book. Once learning the basics, this book may be handy to keep around as a quick reference in case you forget how to do something.

Written in clear, basic language and is a real "how-to" book. I knew this book was concentrating on Microsoft FrontPage for website development, so I can't wait to pick up the program now and try out the tips in the book! The author makes you feel like even a beginner can do this.
