It seems a little strange that the same company that put out this album also released "The Very Best Of.." in 2001. But this is arguably a better collection depending on what you prefer. Since his first album in '72 (which had no hits), he would go on to have eleven top 40 hits all of which are here(four of them made the top ten). His highest charting single was "Longer" which for 2 weeks stalled at #2 in March 1980 behind two different number ones. His first hit was "Part Of The Plan". "Leader Of The Band" is about Dan's father while "Run For The Roses" was written for the Kentucky Derby. "The Language Of Love" was an upbeat track released during the height of MTV. "Same Old Lang Syne" recalls an old sweetheart and "Rhythm Of The Rain" is a well done cover version of The Cascades original 1963 hit with a few lines from The Beatles'"Rain" thrown in at the end.

There are also two tracks here that would be considered standout cuts since they weren't released as singles. "Phoenix" was the title track from his sixth album and "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler" from his second album was produced by Joe Walsh who later joined The Eagles.

Though the tracks are not in chronological order,here's an album that truly lives up to its title. All his major hits are here without much emphasis on unnecessary album tracks. Looking back on his career, he's definitely one the greatest singer/songwriters of his or any generation.

I enjoy the music of Dan fogelberg. But I am tired of record labels rereleasing the same stuff with one or two different tracks and giving it a new title. This CD isn't that much different from the 1982 Greatest Hits release. I would love to see a greatest hits volume 2 CD from Dan fogelberg. It would include songs like, She Don't Look Back, Seeing You Again, Language Of Love, Go Down Easy, Lonely In Love, and There's A Place In The World For A Gambler. I wish that record labels would stop filling greatest hits CD's with Extra throw away tracks that no one knows. A greatest hits CD should be just that. All of the hits, and the versions that we know and love.

I'm not a Dan Fogelberg expert and I haven't heard the other albums put out, but I do love this album. As a passing listener of Dan's music, this album fits the bill. It has all of the favorites I remember hearing on the radio as a teen. It is a pleasure to listen to. Actually this is my husbands CD, but he lets me borrow it. He is happy with the music it contains too.

If you are someone who enjoys Dan's music, but you don't need everything he has put out, this CD should be a perfect fit for you. Enjoy!

The 'essential' Dan Fogelberg songs cannot fit on one cd. This should have been part one and covered the first half of Dan's career. A second disc should have followed containing the highlights of the the second half of his career.

As it is, this compilation contains not even one song from "Nether Lands". It would be pointless to list the rest of the songs left off of this 'essential' collection because there are simply too many.

So, the 4 stars are given for the songs themselves, and not for the way this compilation was selected. Also, I'd hoped for better sound quality, I can't really detect much of a difference from the sound quality here and the quality of the same songs on other cd's. One can only hope for SACD versions or at least truly remastered versions in the future.

Also, the version of "Missing You" on this disc is about 25 seconds shorter than the version on "The Very Best of Dan Fogelberg"; the guitar is faded out early at the end of the song.

Thank you ever so much...The CD is wonderful and all and I mean all of the songs on the CD are great. This brings back memories of a younger day, all great memories and I have looked for this CD for sometime. As always Amazon comes through 100%. I certainly will purchase directly from you again.. The Late Dan Fogelberg came of musical age in an era when sensitive male singers like Jackson Browne and The Eagles (in their "Best of My Love" mode) were making it possible for men to sing emotional songs and still have musical credibility. This collection usurps most of the competition by covering more years and by keeping the Top 20 breakthrough "The Power of Gold." Fogelberg could go from sappy (Phoenix's "Longer") to dramatic (his masterpiece The Innocent Age) and still hold his solid sense of melody. Coupled with a terrific production sense, this CD really brings out the best in the songs (especially "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Heart Hotels").

The hits may have stopped coming by the late 80's, but like Browne and James Taylor, the quality stayed high. The ahead of the curve High Country Snows and the dark divorce CD Exiles are ignored completely, but this is still a good collection for those of us who remember the softer sounds of the 70's and 80's.

This is the best single disc colllection of the late Dan Fogelberg out there,it includes all 10 tracks that were on his original 1982 Greatest Hits album + 4 more,with great remastered sound!!! 14 great songs in all!!! Great price too!!! Recommended!!! A+

ACTUALLY, AFTER LISTENING TO THE POWER OF GOLD, PHOENIX, PART OF THE PLAN, I COULD NOT HELP BUT THINK THAT "DAN FOGELBERG" WAS ONE OF MY GENERATIONS PROLIFIC SONGWRITERS/MUSICIAN. NICE JOB D.F.

i have been a huge devoted fan of dan's since he started in the business. his music far exceeds any other artist, his talents were never ending. this cd in fact is the essential songs by dan. i thoroughly have enjoyed listening to it. over and over. i couldn't recommend it more, if you are a dan fan. i have all of his albums, cassettes and cd's. you won't be sorry for the purchase you made. he is deeply missed by millions of fans.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoy this CD together while on the road and home.
