I can go for this (yes can do)., September 20, 2005
Wow. In just a few short years we went from one very dated 1983 collection to four. Hey, fine with me. Hall & Oates are one of those groups that when you look at a tracklist like this, you forget just how many hits they really had. Then when you give it a listen, you remember how great they really are, and how much you've always enjoyed them. I usually tend to listen to more alternative and hard rock, but being a child of the 80's, and a music lover in general, I can't help but love Hall & Oates. This 2-disc collection is a generous 37 tracks, half of which is easily recognizable to any radio listener. My personal favorites are "You Make My Dreams", "Private Eyes", "Family Man", and of course "Maneater". I also really like the songs "Out Of Touch", "Method Of Modern Love", and "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid", all from the same album. The great thing with an "Essential" type collection though, is that you get all the hits, as well as the early and later songs. In short, it's an excellent collection of Rock & Soul.

looking for the most comprehensive Hall & Oates collection?, December 21, 2006
maybe you're like me and you're looking for the most complete Hall & Oates collection. well, let me save you some time. After looking through the 5 or 6 "greatest hits" collections in their catalog, THIS 2-CD set has virtually ALL of the songs that the other collections have and then some. Nothing is left out.
In fact, there are two 2-CD sets here (ESSENTIAL Hall & Oates and ULTIMATE Hall & Oates) and THEY HAVE THE EXACT SAME TRACK LISTING. What the hell's the point in that? LOL So buy whichever one is cheaper.
You're welcome. :-)

The definitive Hall and Oates collection, August 1, 2005
Note - this is a re-packaging of the earlier Ultimate Daryl Hall and John Oates. The track listing is identical.
Daryl Hall and John Oates are generally classified as white soul singers but this description is too simplistic - they adapted their style to suit changing musical fashions. This double CD shows just how varied their music was. While they had six number one hits (Rich girl, Kiss on my list, Private eyes, I can't go for that no can do, Man-eater, Private eyes, Out of touch) and many other big hits in their American homeland, they never came close to that level of success internationally. In Britain, they had just two top ten hits (I can't go for that no can do, Man-eater) with nothing else getting close although they had plenty of minor hits while Paul Young made the UK top five with a cover of Every time you go away - the very different original Hall and Oates version is included here.
Apart from their six American number ones, this collection includes all the other important hits that they recorded together but not Daryl's solo hit Dreamtime. Here you can find their covers of Family man (Mike Oldfield) and You've lost that loving feeling (Righteous brothers) as well as their original classic songs such as She's gone, One on one, Did it in a minute, Say it isn't so, Adult education, Method of modern love, Everything your heart desires, So close and Sara smile.
Many less famous tracks are also to be found on this fantastic compilation of the best of the music that Daryl Hall and John Oates recorded together.

Missed Opportunity, June 15, 2005
For so many acts, hits collections can often tell a good story about the life of the artist, or can just be re-packaged into something that was just a missed opportunity by any artist. Since Sony & BMG merged in 2004, the move was conjured into one big company that thought they just knew a good thing about making so much for so many acts. For one of the greatest duos of all time, Hall & Oates, that just didn't seem to add up all the way. Back in 2004, Hall & Oates had a magical collection of their hits simply put as Ultimate Hall & Oates. Unfortunately, this is that package re-made over again.
What was then 2004's Ultimate Hall & Oates, now The 2005 Essential Hall & Oates, is the exact same double album of the duos biggest songs of all. The album still does reflect what made Hall & Oates fantastic. The collection includes so many of their big hits including Sara Smile, One On One, Maneater, She's Gone, and other great tracks Hall & Oates have made. Unfortunately, there are a few disadvantages with this collection. Instead of adding new and recent tracks like I'll Be Around, Man On A Mission, and Getaway Car, this collection overshadows them. Another disadvantage, is that the songs weren't remastered as well as the previous Ultimate Hall & Oates package. It just doesn't sound as organic and fresh as it did before.
For so many who have purchased other Hall & Oates packages, you're just better off with the original Ultimate Hall & Oates package. If you can't find the previous editon, this colection will just have to do.

Essential, November 29, 2005
2 CD's, 37 songs, all remastered....you can't go wrong! It is all here, folks! Every hit and then some!
Hall & Oates had such a long string of hits over a pretty long period of time. They were one of the most known writing duo in the late 70's/early 80's and it is all showcased here on the ESSENTIAL!
You get all their HUGE hits "I Can't Gor For That", "Maneater", "Kiss On My List", "She's Gone", "Rich Girl", "Private Eyes" etc.......all the way to key tracks from their many CD's. There are a lot of Hall & Oates on this CD and it pleases from beginning to end.
Very nice CD insert that tells you when each song debuted and where it charted as well.
This is great music that everyone knows and sings along to when they hear it and is still just as relevant today as it was 20+ years ago. *******Check it out********

Essential indeed, January 31, 2008
As the title of this CD says, this is Essential. To me Hall & Oates were as big in the 1980's as The A-Team, Michael Jackson's brilliant "Bad" and WWF's Ultimate Warrior. Of course they started out in the '70s and produced some great songs (especially in my opinion their definitive version of You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling) but as a kid growing up in the 1980's it was their prolific string of Top Ten singles I loved then and still do all these years later.
One small gripe with these two discs of great material which sounds as new as ever after Remastering, is the lack of Daryl Hall's solo hit Dreamtime. Another classic 80's song that I presume was left off for contractual reasons. But otherwise a brilliant overview of their career and highly recommended to pop, rock, soul, r&b fans and all music lovers with taste.

Not quite enough to fill 2 discs, March 26, 2008
Loved Hall & Oates ever since I was a kid. They were actually my first concert. As I got older and got into more progressive types of music, they sort of fell by the wayside in my collection, and I lost most of the early to mid 80s CDs I had. But recently I became nostalgic for their hits again (In the midst of a larger 80s nostalgia trip), so I decided to get this disc. I debated getting the older single-disc Hits cd, but opted for this instead as it was only a few bucks more. This was the only CD that had all the songs I wanted, but on two discs. Unfortunately, to get everything I wanted, I also had to deal with some of their less quality tunes, which is not a problem, but I think they could really make an excellent H&O greatest hits to fit on a single CD. In fact, I think I'm gonna rip the two CDs and pare them down to a single 80 minute perfect compilation.
Also, the CD case shipped completely cracked. Thanks Amazon!

Hall & Oates, February 25, 2007
I bought this CD last month. I have "Rock and Soul part I" and think it is a fantastic collection of their music. This disc has all of the songs on R&S and a few more I was glad to get. However, there are also several mediocre if not just terrible songs included. Just buy Rock and Soul and download any other titles you want from itunes.

Whoah, oh, here they come!, August 16, 2006
Hall & Oates were one of the best pop/rock duos of the 80's. In fact, they are considered a signature look and sound of the early MTV craze. Along with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, The Police, Peter Gabriel, and Huey Lewis & The News amongst others, Hall & Oates helped shape the nostalgic vibe that was to come out of the 80's and linger on for decades to come. However, the rocking couple first hit the scene in the late 60's/early 70's and slowly but surely made an unforgettable and successful career as singers and songwriters well into the 80's and to this very day.
The duo's best songs are all here, from as early on as the soulful She's Gone, When The Morning Comes, the hit Sara Smile, and the incredible Rich Girl, to the typical 80's pop classics Maneater, Family Man, Method Of Modern Love, and You Make My Dreams, The Essential Hall & Oates will leave you craving for more. The compilation also includes all of the pair's famous tunes: the catchy hit singles Private Eyes, and I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), the elusive ballad One On One, the superb Say It Isn't So, and, one of my personal favorites, the chart-topping popsicle Out Of Touch. The album also features the brilliant cover You've Got That Lovin' Feelin', and the original Everytime You Go Away (the song later became a hit and memorable classic for Paul Young).
If you're an 80's fan like I am, this double-disc compilation is definitely worth buying!

Great compilation, by another name. , June 19, 2005
This compilation of Hall and Oates is exactly the same thing as "The Ultimate Hall & Oates", just the title has been changed a little and a different design. The tracks are identical, though. It looks as though they've discontinued "The Ultimate Hall and Oates" and are continuing with this clone. I only have good things to say about this compilation, as I did the "The Ultimate Hall and Oates". It contains all of their best-loved songs, it's a perfect collection, great sound. If you own only one Hall and Oates compilation, it should be this one.
