From the Inside Flap

Introduction

When I decided to write this book, it was my intention to provide to Web professionals a cogent and defendable methodology for developing Web sites. For years, I have seen both systems and Web sites developed in an undisciplined manner. What results is a system or Web site for which a great deal of retrofitting and reengineering is necessary. Retrofitting is expensive and its necessity is the result of not taking a thorough and disciplined approach to developing the Web site.

The methodology suggested herein is based upon sound systems engineering principles. The approach is to perform a thorough and complete requirements analysis up front. A solid analysis provides the foundation for designing a Web site that will meet the usersÕ needs each and every time. A successful Web site will also be easy to maintain, since major blocks of thought are not left out. While revisions are needed, they will be more related to the business needs and exigencies than to faulty, premature design.

Throughout this book, there are images that are worth viewing in color. At various points in the text, you will be prompted to visit a Web site, where color versions of the images are shown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Web Site Architecture well defined, January 24, 2001
This review is from: Essential Design for Web Professionals (Essentials for Web Professionals) (Paperback)
As a member of the World Organization of Webmasters, who endorses this book, I was very excited to read and learn from Mr. Lyons writings. I found the book to be extremely helpful in showing upper management how web sites should be done,as opposed to our current standard of piecing sites together.

In the book, retrofitting is mentioned. I hadn't seen this term used and understood immediately what was meant. It is very enlightening to see your good and your bad habits in print and then to be able to do something about them.

This is a good book for defining the architecture and creative process that builds a solid web site for the needs of the users.

Downside? Almost half of the book is appendix. I have plenty of XML and XHTML books, and didn't expect that knowledge to come from here.

By far, the largest chapter in the book is 'How to use DreamWeaver to create your site'. I don't use DreamWeaver and have no intentions of doing so. Maybe because there is no 'Essential DREAMWEAVER for web professionals' it got lumped into design.

But don't get me wrong, it is worth the read. The things that are stated in the book need to be known if building a good web site. And if you already know it, it is good to be reminded.
