Book Description

November 2, 2010
For Jose Solís and Paul Sherrill, partners in Solís Betancourt, the goal for every interior is a balance between formal and informal, traditional and contemporary, while always keeping comfort and livability in mind. There is a striking simplicity to their arrangement of furniture and art: the look is subtle, never excessive, yet the designers are not afraid to bring in dramatic elements to surprise and enchant the eye. These choices contribute to a look that appears effortless, as though the collection of objects came together little by little over decades.

Most notably in a Solís Betancourt room, comfort centers on the sensuous fabrics that might envelop an armchair, cushion a delicate settee, or softly frame a set of French doors. Fabric might be used as an accent, lining niches or bookcases as a background for the objects on display. Or fabric might take on a more important role, covering the ceiling and walls to create a tactile and alluring environment. Nubby linens, shimmering silks, regal damasks, are subtly layered into a serene composition that begs to be touched and enjoyed.

These are interiors that offer a moment of transcendence, a glimpse beyond everyday routine. These are rooms to come home to, sanctuaries that offer a sense of protection, tranquility, and beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite November 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I enjoy a wide variety of design books, including those focused on both traditional and modern homes. In this book, you get the best of both. Some homes are more traditional with a contemporary flair and others are more contemporary with traditional features. Either, way, all of them are exquisite. And striking. And even livable. What's also commendable is that many monographs of particular designers are nothing more than testaments to the designer's ego and "rarefied" taste. None of the homes within this book, no matter how sumptuous or how understated, send that message. To tell you the truth, I was so excited to see this book, I paid full price, and I NEVER do that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Interior Design Book November 16, 2010
By rjl
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The interiors of Solis Betancourt are absolutely astonishing. While always elegant and refined, this book clearly demonstrates that every project designed by Solis Betancourt has a different personality that adapts to the client and location. I am very impressed with the versatility that Solis Betancourt shows in this book, with magnificent and fitting interiors from a luxurious apartment in Park Avenue in New York City to a beach house in Puerto Rico. This book is an absolute delight! I recommend this book to everyone who appreciates great taste, interior design and architecture; it is certainly a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential indeed November 16, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I think "timeless" is a really great way to describe the style of Solis Betancourt and all the designs that are featured in this book. "Elegance" is a great tittle for this book/design as it combines a sense of sophistication and spaciousness, while maintaining the symmetry and simplicity of a bygone era and combining it with a practical modern living niche.

Definitely a must own for any one interested in interior design

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! February 11, 2011
By Matt D
Format:Hardcover
Jose Solis and Paul Sherrill are masters of the detail. Every inch of their interiors are sculpted from a rich palate of color, texture, and line. Their ability to blend old world elegance with a modern sensibility results in work that seems timeless. Their interiors often feature highly unique, museum-quality pieces that are perfectly contrasted with their surroundings, creating stunning compositions.

I have had the unique opportunity to tour some of their spaces in person and while the book cannot do justice to the pure sensory pleasure one experiences of inhabiting a Solis Betancourt designed space, it does a very good job of showcasing some of their best work. Anyone serious about interior architecture and design should spend some time absorbing this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection November 18, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Just looking at this book makes me feel elegant, fancy, and stylish. Essential elegance is the perfect contribution to anyone's coffee table and or library, and it is a book that will still convey the same timeless interior elegance in 50 or 60 years from now. I can confirm that this book goes great with a cappuccino and a Sunday morning. Bravo!
