Editorial Reviews

About the Author

T. S. Eliot, (1888-1965) recast 20th century English poetry with a whole new vocabulary of technique, giving voice to a bold, vibrantly original Modernist style. In addition to his poetry, his body of work includes many landmark critical essays, as well as plays such as The Cocktail Party and Murder in the Cathedral. In 1948, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

From AudioFile

It's always enlightening to hear a poet read his own work, and this set of recordings of T. S. Eliot from 1947 and 1955 may offer more than the readings of many other poets. His work is so intellectually challenging and obscure that it is easy to focus on the content when reading silently. When Eliot reads, the complex rhythms of the poems tug at the listener's attention. Sometimes he sounds as if he's chanting, other times as if he's singing bits of popular songs that drifted through the characters' brains, and others as if he's just having fun with sound itself. While the recording is most useful for bringing life to his complex poem "The Hollow Men," for sheer listening pleasure it's hard to beat "Macavity: the Mystery Cat." 3.0 out of 5 stars Inadequate content., April 7, 2007
This review is from: Essential Eliot CD (Caedmon Essentials) (Audio CD)
Buyer beware! It is wonderful to hear Eliot read his poetry, but this CD collection is much reduced in content from Caedmon's audiotape collection: T.S. Eliot Reads: The Wasteland, Four Quartets and Other Poem. One can hardly imagine Eliot without "Four Quartets," "Ash Wednesday," and "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," so one cannot call this CD "Essential Eliot." Because of this, the word "unabridged" on the cover appears misleading, even deceptive. Caedmon & HarperCollins need replicate the audiotape content on compact disc, so that superior content can be wedded with the superior medium.

I love these recordings, particularly the one of The Wasteland. However, Prufrock is missing.
