My daughter is competing in Disease Detectives as a middle schooler. I bought this book after reading the excerpt. Although there is quite a bit of technical information, the book's content is written in such a way that I could understand the majority of the information (no medical background for me) and create a study guide for my daughter. I also had my daughter and her partner read sections of the book. Questions to check understanding along the way as well as chapter quizzes are great. Answers with explanation for chapter quizzes are located in the back of the book. Interesting factual stories are scattered throughout the book and make the reading much more interesting. Very happy with purchase!

If you are fascinated in learning about cultures different from your own and how much impact plagues can be on the society, I would recommend this. It kept me interested.
