Book Description

March 1, 2002 0865165130 978-0865165137
This monograph and selective anthology serve to introduce the most immediately accessible and compelling playwright of the ancient Greek theater. The only volume of its kind available, it provides a rich selection of core plays and a substantial introduction to the full scope of the Euripidean corpus.

In 'Mortal Vision' Meagher endeavors to strike the core of what he takes to be Euripides' abiding concerns: war, the plight of women, and the awful mystery of the gods. The five plays selected for inclusion here embody those concerns as fully and powerfully as any in the Euripidean repertoire. Finally, in 'Revel and Revelation,' Meagher looks back at Euripides' consummate masterwork, the Bakkhai, as a definitive response to the ancient quip that Athenian drama has little or nothing to do with Dionysos. Nothing could be further FROM the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars For serious students of ancient Greek drama in general, May 10, 2002
This review is from: The Essential Euripides: Dancing in Dark Times (Paperback)
The Essential Euripides: Dancing in Dark Times by Robert Emmet Meagher (Professor of Humanities, School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies, Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts) is an exhaustive, 555 page monograph and anthology specifically written to help modern-day readers and theater lovers better understand the classic works of Euripides, who is perhaps the most accessible of the ancient Greek playwrights that we know of today. Superbly translated by Professor Meagher (who also proffers an extremely extensive and meaningful commentaries throughout), The Essential Euripides is an absolute "must-read" for serious students of ancient Greek drama in general, and the works of Euripides in particular, as well as an essential, core addition to academic reference collections.
