5.0 out of 5 stars not a fashion illustrator
I'm not in the slightest interested in being part of the fashion industry, but I love this book. It's the best one I've found on the market for learning to draw people. A lot of drawing books are for pencil sketchers and I was looking for ink and finished line drawing work. This book is excellent for that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
Pros: Great illustrations for the artist learning to draw the human body.
Cons: Only one body type and covers only one age group. So that's a pro for fashion folks, a con for Artists.

Great new poses for people that already have knowledge of fashion drawing, needs a little detail when it talks about creating a fashion pose different to the frontal..
Overall great book for reinforcing what you already know..

The images in this book are unreal.

If you want to learn how to draw figures which look natural and have a realistic flow with posture and movement - this is the book for you.

I got it for my old girl for Xmas and she LOVES it.
Money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful; Glad I Bought It, December 28, 2010

This review is from: Essential Fashion Illustration (Paperback)
Like another reviewer, I'm not a fashion illustrator or designer, but was looking to learn/improve my rendering of the human form (in my case, for inclusion in interior design sketches) and so I got this book. I LOVE it--I'm so glad I got this one. I was debating between this and a few others, and ultimately decided on this one because I could see via Amazon's preview function that it contains detailed lessons on such sub-topics as hair and face, hands, feet, legs, accessories, and of course clothing. In addition, it has a section on rendering, with instruction on rendering in soft and oil pastel, watercolor, and marker.

I am making my way through the book, practicing a few drawings at a time, and have gone from drawing very embarrassing, kid-like renditions of figures on my own, to being able to copy the examples in the book, and finally being able to really understand how to draw and render the human face and body in different poses, as well as in all different kinds of clothing. After studying the material in this book, I actually had the courage to take a workshop in portraiture--the instruction in the book provided a very good foundation for doing so.

The only weakness is that the example subjects are limited to young, able-bodied, white women. It makes sense that a fashion illustration book reflects only model-fit and beautiful subjects, but I would have loved to see men, children, and other ethnicities included. Still, I do love this book and refer to it almost daily. It's changed the way I draw and has given me a ton of confidence I didn't have before. It's definitely a keeper!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, retro, simple, October 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Essential Fashion Illustration (Paperback)
The Essential Fashion Illustration is definitely a welcome book in my illustration collection, simply because of the style it teaches. It teaches simple methods for all views and poses, easy ways to make a drawing professional, and clear instruction when describing how to do a technique. My personal favorite part of this book, is the styles that it covers. The book offers simple lessons in watercolor, wax pencil, charcoal, pencil and other media. For each section, they use pictures from relevant eras, i.e. the 20's predominantly had watercolor adverts and color blocks. Personally, since my illustrations are of a more Art Deco/Retro etc. nature, this is a perfect addition to anyone wanting to have a quick go-to how-to for realistic illustration. In terms of the 'industry standard' of the long-legged goddesses that adorn Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc. this book is better at describing the regular figure but it does hint at some of the more elongated styles as well.

This review is from: Essential Fashion Illustration (Paperback)
This book is so great! If you want to draw people then this is the book you should get. It is great, mostly pictures, which makes it even more enjoyable. It is great for anyone from about 10 or 11 to as old as 100! It is never too late to learn. So get this book for your future fashionista, i highly reccomend it! And the other essential fashion illustration books are also spectacular, especially essential fashion illustration: details, and essential fashion illustration: poses. They are deffiantly worth the money, and the book is made out of nice non rippabe pages.
