I love the new cover, with a striking photo of The 5th Dimension taken at their heights, but this 2 CD set is the exact same one that Arista released in 1997 as UP, UP AND AWAY: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, with just one song selection changed. This new 2 CD set has CALIFORNIA MY WAY instead of the non-album I'LL BE LOVIN' YOU FOREVER, which was a single before UP, UP AND AWAY was a major hit. The only other difference is that Disc 1 is now in chronological order of release. Sony now owns Arista, so all they did was re-release this as part of their ESSENTIAL series. It is an excellent , complete set of every hit that the 5th had on the Soul City and Bell labels, from 1967 through 1974. Can not fault the music, as the 5th Dimension have one joyous hit after another to listen to. Corporate Sony could have at least released a new collection, and offered up some seldom compiled album tracks or rarities. In particular, a song from 1973 that was the B-side to FLASHBACK called DIGGIN' FOR A LIVIN' . This song has a great Billy Davis Jr. lead , with strong backing support from the group. It's very much a soul stirring rocker, and it's never been issued on CD. To entice buyers, they could have licensed a track or more from their final album that they did for ABC Records - EARTHBOUND. That album has never been issued on CD. Or even their charted version of LOVE HANGOVER from 1976, though Marilyn & Billy were no longer in the group, Florence did do the lead. There is nothing new to entice the completist to buy this edition. But if you don't already have the Arista double from 1997, take your pick. The Arista set does have much more complete packaging, liner notes and photos. Corporate Sony did this new set without any creativity or additional tracks, which would have been an extra something to an already existing CD.

I've been on You Tube recently and seen catty comments that this group had no soul. Bull! Though it's not included in this two-disc collection, I dare anyone to say that after hearing Billy Davis, Jr. sing "Let it Be Me." In fact, I think Davis, along with the late Carl Anderson, is among the best soul vocalists in the world!

I grew up listening to this group in my home and, while true that Johnny Rivers transformed them from a typical soul group to a powerful pop harmony group, there was still plenty of soul on their albums. Check out the way Davis delivers "The Worst that Could Happen"--wow! This is a nice representation of their best works, if not exactly what each individual wants, but it's a pleasure to listen to their wonderful renditions of songs penned by the likes of Jimmy Webb and Laura Nyro on CD. As well as all the hits we are all familiar with, there's the special treat of inclusions like "Learn How to Fly," "Paper Cup," "Sweet Blindness(an absolute favorite of mine)," "Time and Love," and the gorgeously heartbreaking "Everything's Changed."

If you are a diehard of the group, you won't be happy with this compilation, because diehards never are. If you are a casual listener who wants something more, or you want an abridged collection of all you own, this is a decent one for the money. The 5th Dimension weren't just pop puppets, but an important vocal group that bridged a wide array of fans. For that they should be commended and not scorned. No soul indeed! By the way, contrary to rumor, Marilyn and Billy are just fine and have a new album and tour coming up this year. I wish them all the best, and I hope they sell out everywhere they appear!

Great recording and wonderful music for all time.
So many re-recordings lose something in the process but this CD had very respectable fidelity.

Groups come and go. So did FIfth Dimension, but for a few years in the late 60s and early 70s they had many top 40 hits, often more than one at a time. Some complained that they weren't soulful enough. Others complained they didn't cross over enough. They did just fine. A favorite from a long, and still wonderful to hear. Complaints about too much bass in the remix are somewhat justified. However, the original mixes were for AM radio, which couldn't tolerate much bass at all. Use the equalizer settings on your player to get the balance you prefer.

In 1966 Johnny Rivers signed a then-unknown group called the Versatiles to his new imprint Soul City/Liberty,but,as under their new name, thought up by Babbett Townsend,Tenor Ron's wife, the 5th Dimension achieved monumental success with "Up,Up & Away" the track that leads off this package,in 1967..More or less,it's a repackage of the "Anthology" set,but better sound overall...A great "Starters kit" for new 5D fans!

This has all the music of the 5th Dimension. If you don't have the 1997 set, get this one.
All of their greatest songs are on here and all sound good. I agree with the other 6 reviewers. Not much more to say. They have said it all.
