Out of all the books I received upon deciding to have a baby, this was my favorite and helped me feel the most confident about my parenting skills. I am a first time parent and before this I never really had that much experience around children. The author provides a nice overview of topics in what my opinion is a neutral point of view. She gives examples of how things can be done but encourages finding your own parenting style. The book is easy to read in small bursts, which is helpful during late pregnancy or after you've had your baby.

This book does not go into extreme depth on all the topics, but I consider that a good thing. Because all of this was new to me, a lot of the more in-depth books were a little overwhelming! For first time parents I recommend starting out with this book, but after reading it you should also get another book that goes into detail on the topics you are interested in. Although I really wanted to have a baby I was intimidated by the idea of being a parent. I was afraid of not having enough information, of doing things wrong, etc. While parenting is certainly not easy, this author's gentle tone and relaxed communication style made me feel like "Yeah! I can do this!"

My baby is now 3 months old and I got the book in my first trimester of pregnancy, in case you're wondering. :)

I wanted to not only know how to do things for my new baby but why. A lot of advice given and read is based on opinion and I wanted something that was solid in research. I have learned so much as a early childhood educator but wanted to know things that were developmentally appropriate for my baby. The author of this book is a fellow of the Bristish Psychology Society and a founding member of the U.K. branch of the World Associateion for Infant Mental Health. She has been doing research for decades and I trusted her advice.

I have to say it is so easy to read and the charts and quick references are fantastic. This book is very focused on what is best for your baby. Some advice I was getting from other people around me did not seem right or feel right as a mom. This book has research and information that just makes sense and feels right for you and your baby. I loved the research boxes that are found throughout the book. In them they talk about research finds in a a way that a child could understand. I actually read the book through word for word. It was that good and informative.

Penelope Leach also writes a more "how to" book called Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five. I haven't used this as much but it is a good general reference book.

I would buy this book for every new mom in my life if I had enough money.

As a teacher I am constantly seeing parents not doing the best things for their chidren based on current trends, opinions, or just because that is how their mom raised them. They don't even realize that what they are doing is not developmentally appropriate and that is because they just aren't educated about what is appropriate. I hope more people read books like this because they are based on trusted research.

My baby is 18 months old and doing fantastic. :)

My midwife and pediatrician recommended Dr. and Martha Sears' "The Baby Book." While I found it very useful, Penelope Leach goes into much more detail on behavior, what to do with your infant, and doesn't focus quite so fervently on attachment parenting. Her writing and examples are excellent. That being said, I actually prefer her book "Your Baby and Child from Birth to Age 5." It contains almost all of "The Essential First Year" and so much more! Spend the extra money on the full version.

I had the larger volume of birth to age five, but I found this to be a big help to new parents.
It provides much information without it being an encyclopedia .

Very good book on child rearing. Not exactly like many others which only adds to all the other books vs repeats. An excellent read of essential info.

I checked this book out from the library and loved it so much I had to order a copy to keep.

I agree with the other commenters who found the information to be comprehensive and helpful.

I would also like to mention what a beautiful book it is. There are many stunning full-page photographs that make the book very enjoyable to flip through.

I'd recommend this book to expectant mothers who want to get a head start on child care!

I like this book, as it a short cut to the basics that are in "Your Baby, Your Child" I would suggest this book to everyone
