5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one! Excellent!!!!!
These recordings have never sounded better. BMG has used the latest hi-tech remastering techniques to squeeze every ounce of music out of Glenn Miller's original hits. Even if you already have these tunes on an earlier reissue, you'll want to update your collection with this far superior 2 cd set. You won't regret it!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Essential Glenn Miller...yes and no
This collection sounds pretty good, but it's a little heavy on the noise reduction in my opinion. As for the songs, all the "big" hits are included, but there's too many Ray Eberle ballads for my taste. A better balance of songs can be found on the 3 disc set "The Popular Recordings (1938-1942)". Less Eberle, and more Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton and instrumentals. As for...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Swing!!, July 26, 2001

Wow! This 2 CD set is wonderful. The sound is fantastic. And the chronological song selection was well thought out. From "Moonlight Serenade" to "Juke Box Saturday Night", these 47 songs hit all the notes, fast and slow. A good mix. This is the best overall overview of Miller out there. If you only buy one Miller CD, this is the one to get. The Essential Glenn Miller truly lives up to it's title, and it's worth every penny.

This RCA double-disc set ought to be in everyone's collection of classic jazz and swing music just because IT IS GREAT MUSIC, not because it is Glen Miller. (If you're a Glen Miller fan you probably already have this set.) In any case this is one to buy and play often. These sounds are irreplaceable. Nobody played music with a sound like Glen Miller's, a sound that is uniquely recognizable and loved world-wide. Other sets have other tracks that are equally worth buying but the tracks on this set are essentials.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essentially Terrific!, February 5, 2001

This is the "Essential" Glenn Miller CD to start with. I wanted to hear more Glenn Miller's songs as well as hear my parents' "song" which was "Imagination".

They didn't scrimp with 47 songs on two CD's! Sound quality is excellent. The favorites, Chattanooga Choo Choo, In the Mood, Pennsylvania 6-5000, I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Cocktail and more are great.

But you find yourself enjoying ALL the songs such as Elmer's Tune, Song of the Volga Boatmen, Perfida, and Adios! A nice 35-page book tells a detailed Glenn Miller story and song details with lots of pictures.

CD producer Paul Williams and staff have set the bar for all who would create compilations for other performers.

And, Imagination makes a very nice "song".

If you like the unique sound of the Miller band and the songs he made famous, this CD set is essential! They have taken time to properly rerecord this music and bring out as much of it's richness as possible in the process. I find listening to them a great way to end a hectic week and just relax. You won't be sorry with this purchase.

WOW!! INCREDIBLE!! AMAZING!! What more can you say? If you dig the Wartime nostalgic moods of Glenn Miller look no further. This is the VERY BEST of Glenn Miller. Every cut is a jewel. WHEN THE TEMPO GETS SLOW, IT'S TIME TO TURN IT UP HIGH. You can almost see the dancers floating across the floor.

What ever happened to all this feel-good dance music? When musicians actually crafted musical feeling with real solid instruments and the people enjoyed themselves even though they were living through dark times. Man, I was born in the wrong era. I'm 44 and I've lived through every possible musical phase imaginable and for some reason I keep going back to the Golden Age of Jazz, Swing, and Doo Wop. Maybe because this music never fails to put a smile on my face. I love it. GLENN MILLER LIVES!!

THANKS RCA, FOR PRESERVING THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC IN A STUNNING COLLECTION. I'M BLOWN AWAY.

Cherish this music while you still can. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Music of Our Lives, June 20, 2005
This review is from: Essential Glenn Miller (Audio CD)
I have owned this for years and it is by far the finest Glenn Miller compilation I have ever run across. As you can see from the listing of songs not much is missed here. None of the well known favorites are missing and just a ton of great lesser known tunes are here. Miller and his band made magic and this 2-disc set will certainly cast a spell on you.

From the richly romantic to the light and breezy, Miller did it all. Amazingly, that versatility is the only thing 'critics' of Miller can find to gripe about. He tapped into different styles and made great music that was more accessible than Goodman and others. His popularity, then and now, does not detract from some of the greatest music ever made. The Miller sound has survived all these decades because of its greatness.

The sound is crisp and clean, these memorable recordings once again sounding as good as they must have when first released. As the decades have passed, our appreciation for Miller's music has only grown, those smooth big band rhythms with their catchy arrangements and attention to detail recognized now as some of the greatest music of our lives.

Miller's genius is all over every great selection here. Everyone will have their personal favorites on this set. "Perfidia" has such a catchy hook it sounds as fresh today as it did way back when. I can not think of a more romantic big band song than Miller's "I Know Why (And So Do You)."

And then there is "Moonlight Cocktails." If this Miller song doesn't make you happy, longing for the romance of another time, you just don't love music. It is probably my favorite on a set which includes "Moonlight Serenade," Little Brown Jug" and just about every other popular Miller tune.

For the money you simply can't beat this collection. The sound quality of this 2-disc set is incredible and you'd never know how many years these Miller classics have been around. Pick this one up so you can have it around all the time. It doesn't matter if you grew up with these songs, listened to them with your sweetheart or you weren't even born when these recordings were made. Miller's music was then, and still is, the music of our lives.

You'll long for a "Stairway to the Stars" to go get Miller and bring him back after a listen to this set. If only Miller were right, and wishing really would make it so.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation of Miller's golden years, August 7, 2010
This review is from: Essential Glenn Miller (Audio CD)
Glenn Miller formed his own band in the late 1930s after deciding he was done with touring with less popular bands. At first, the Miller band had trouble getting on the right foot and Miller almost gave up, but after enough experimenting, he found the right style. The Miller band has a very distinctive style than any other band at the time, which is described in the booklet, it didn't go heavy on the brass or woodwind, there were few solos, everything went together in perfect harmony, Miller didn't like solos because it ruined the balance and made the other band members grow jealous of the guys who got the famous solos. Almost all Millers most distinctive songs In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Tuxedo Junction, and String of Pearls are all in this collection. Of course, although it does contain a wide variety of Miller's songs, this is only a small fraction of what the Glenn Miller orchestra recorded, there are box sets out there with over 100 songs performed from by the orchestra from their first recordings until Miller's death, but this collection is aimed towards casual fans, who are satisfied with getting most of his hit songs with a good variety of other songs. It will satisfy most fans of swing and big band, and is remastered good enough where the scratchy sound is mild and the sound isn't too refined from the original. The Glenn Miller orchestra is the greatest big band of the 40s in terms of harmony and professionalism, and they might not have been too jazzy or had awesome solos, they were the top of their class and had only the best arrangements, with the legendary Glenn Miller in the cockpit guiding them all, which ironically was his untimely death during a airplane crash in 1944. Although the Glenn Miller orchestra was short lived, it has gone down in history as possibly the most famous and well-known orchestra of the century, and all those standards sound better than ever today and are very pleasant on the ears if you just want to relax to some good old fashioned music when times were simple and people just wanted to dance and enjoy the simple things of life.
