I have been using the 2nd edition of this book to tutor my brother-in-law and his wife. They've enjoyed the book, but recently, I decided to "upgrade". The book arrived in the mail 2 days ago, and I am absolutely astounded. It's in colour. It's got nicer drawings. It's got the same great format. It's got an even better organization. It's still got a smattering of British-only usages, but I've always thought this more of a feature than a bug, and besides, how hard is it to just say, "Americans say it this way instead"?

I'm impressed with the book, and excited to start using it. Highly recommended for autodidacts and tutoring situations.

I have a large collection of English Grammar books. I have found this one to be the best. Each topic is clearly set out, one page of explanation followed by one page of exercises, indexed for easy referral. Ideal for the student who wants to work by him/herself (with answers in the back) or the teacher who wants to check the accuracy of what he/she is teaching. English is a convoluted language with many exceptions to the rule and it is important to be able to present it accurately and clearly to students the first time. Many of my students have bought this book as they consider it sets out clearly all the things they were unsure about in the past.

English is not my native language and I know very well how difficult is to learn a second language without proper education. I have studied Murphy's books for a long time and recommend his books for everybody. There are a lot of good books out there (I have purchased a whole bunch of them!), but no one bits this one. This book is for elementary students. There are also the intermediate grammar and the advanced grammar - all them are great! It is a must have! Buy with confidence!

This really is a GREAT book.
It is British English as all ESL teachers will know.
It is however an American copied BLACK and WHITE version.
The pages are cheap paper - not the coated orange/red paper from the UK version.
It is a straight copy of the UK version but beware.
We ESL teachers buy durable books because lap tops, photo copy machines are not always available.
These pages will rip easily so weigh your options or download the 2nd edition off the net.

I purchased this book to help out an ESL student. I expected it to be excellent due to its glowing recommendations. It is awful. Instead of teaching grammatical structure with an organized layout, it is just a list of 2 page spreads that show examples of one small aspect of grammar. This is supposed to be easier than systematic approaches because it is more "real" or something.

Basically, it never teaches you the tree, just a million leaves all mish-mash with no rhyme or reason. This is far more confusing, not only to me (a native), but to the the ESL student I'm working with. People keep bashing systematic grammar for religious reasons, but it is simply the easiest way to learn. Learning "a list of rules and exceptions" is far easier than learning a million and one patterns with no explanation/structure/logic behind it.

This would only be good as "spot practice" for someone who has a firm grasp of English grammar already.

I use this book to tutor an elementary/low-level adult. I did not pick the book out--it was passed to me from her previous teacher whom moved.

The book is correct in its "To the teacher" section: the book is not a course book and is not taught progressively.

My issue with the book is it really isn't a reference book (as it claims). It lays out grammar in very, very little detail (gives example sentences and minimal explanations).

This book is aimed at "elementary" students but tries to make the information so elementary it strips too much of the information to be truly useful.

All in all, I won't use this book with another student.

...and I don't know who these people are that keep giving the book 5 stars...friends of the author?
