Book Description

March 22, 1999 0471319716 978-0471319719 1
"This timely book sets the bar for Object Transaction Monitors (OTMs). Then it provides in-depth comparisons of the leading OTM contenders-including the dirt and the gotchas. As a result, you get a $3,000 analyst report on the current state of OTMs for the price of a book. How could you pass it up? This book is must reading for anyone involved in middleware." -Robert Orfali, Author Client/Server Survival Guide, Third Edition.

Are Object Monitors (OMs) really the universal alternative to multiple middleware products? What do they offer and how do they compare to other products on the market? How seriously should I take vendors' claims when it comes to our unique requirements? How do I select and use the best OM products for our current and future needs? This essential guide supplies the answers to these and all your questions concerning OM technology. You get impartial assessments of all the leading OM products, including:
* IBM ComponentBroker.
* Microsoft MTS.
* Inprise ITS.
* BEA M3.
* Iona OrbixOTM.

For each product, the authors describe: its architecture and integration with other vendor products; its conformance with CORBA and COM; how each works in real-world business applications; and marketing strategy. All this information is based on in-depth testing and hands-on investigation. You also get a framework for choosing the best product for your overall business, pinpointing application variances, recognizing similar product sets, and identifying future trends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on distributed object computing, May 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Guide to Object Monitors (Paperback)
The Essential Guide to Object Monitors provides a concise and well written guide to object technology. This guide is essential for anyone-especially people who are not software developers-who needs a thorough understanding of distributed object technology. The book begins with a excellent explanation of middleware technology, CORBA, DCOM, and application servers. The next section focuses on reviews of specific products and the pros and cons of using these products for specific development projects with regards to interoperability, scalability, high availability, robustness, security, and manageability. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me!, February 2, 2000
This review is from: Essential Guide to Object Monitors (Paperback)
As advertised, I thought this book provided an excellant introduction to middleware and the OTM market as well as a good overview of the key players. The book is perfect for those readers looking for an easy to understand guide to the products. I should note that anyone looking for code examples or deep technical details would be disappointed to find this isn't the right book for them (I wasn't so it was great for me).

5.0 out of 5 stars A much needed book on the subject of object monitors, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Guide to Object Monitors (Paperback)
The next big wave in software technology is the use of distributed objects for the application architectures.Distributed objects are becoming the brick and the mortar of software development. Object monitors will eventually replace classical TP monitors. If you need a high level overview of the object monitors and the current products in the market this is the best book one can afford.
