Book Description

September 1, 1999
Every company has surplus assets. It can be excess inventory, used plant equipment or unneeded office furniture - anything a company is not using in pursuit of its business. Surplus assets take up space and tie up capital, and they negatively impact your company's bottom line.

There are a range of traditional options available for disposing of surplus assets - resell them to another company or to a dealer, re-deploy them internally, barter them, donate them, etc. This Guide reviews the pros and cons of the various traditional options.

The Guide also reviews how the Internet is changing the way companies dispose of surplus. The driving force has been the evolution of Internet marketplaces, where thousands of businesses come together to transact business quickly and efficiently. Within these marketplaces, one method of sale that is being used with great success is the online auction. By tapping into the large pool of buyers at the marketplace, sellers can generate real competition and realize optimal market pricing on the items they sell.

The appendix of this Guide includes some valuable reference sections, including a directory of key trade and professional associations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Business-to-Business e-commerce is clearly going to be a significant opportunity and trading surplus assets will be an important part of it. This guide clearly lays out the advantages of using an Internet exchange like TradeOut.com and is a great primer for companies (and frankly, this should include all companies) that are considering trading surplus assets online." -- Mary Meeker, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter

"McCagg makes a compelling case for selling surplus assets via the Internet. It's a way to maximize the value of excess assets and efficiently reach a large universe of liquidators and other buyers. With savings on transaction costs and increased profits on each sale, we can greatly improve our return on assets." -- William P. Stiritz, Chairman, Ralston Purina Company

"The Internet changes everything. Buying and selling directly with the efficiency and visibility provided by the Internet makes ultimate sense. Brin McCagg's guide offers a fast and easy way to get started on the future." -- Ray Lane, President & Chief Operating Officer, Oracle Corporation

2.0 out of 5 stars A good infomercial in a book, February 14, 2000
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Selling Surplus Assets (Paperback)
This book is basically an infomercial for TradeOut.com. It does have some useful information, but you are none-too-gently steered in the direction of selling your surplus assets on TradeOut's web site.

That's great if you don't want to think about it, but TradeOut has lots of competition, and some of it is just plain better, especially for technology assets.

Oh, yeah, you can get the book for free if you register on TradeOut's site.
