Product Description

The running of a marathon is a very special accomplishment. At 26.2 miles, the marathon distance seems vastly out of reach for most runners. In this book, Joe Donovan prepares you mentally and physically for the challenge and helps you condition and train for your first marathon. With his advice and encouragement, you, too, will learn how amazing it feels to finish a marathon.

There are many books on the market that explain how to train for a marathon. This book is no exception; however, it offers more. This book explains how to get started with your running, how to purchase gear, how to select a marathon, how to train for and otherwise prepare for a marathon, even including what to eat. It also explain what to expect before, during and after your race, as well as how to stay healthy during the whole process.

What makes this book unique is that it covers topics that every other book on the market neglects: the emotional, spiritual and mental aspects of the marathon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Program and Motivation, April 20, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a well written and inspirational program, not as intimidating as some of the marathon guides out there. I am a first time marathoner, and frankly, it's a bit intimidating to read the "how-to's" from world record holding runners, or gazillion marathon under their belts pro runners. In my mind, I'm not them, I can't do what they do, and (right or wrong) in my mind they have never started from as far behind the eight ball as I am. It's easier for me to follow a program (probably the exact same program) written by a real person, not an elite athelete. Someone who has kids, a life, mental roadblocks, all the flaws that keep most of us from acheiving olympic glory. The program is tough, but it is inspirational, too. This book has turned the idea of running a marathon into something that would be cool to do someday if I could ever get into that kind of shape, into something I am doing, I can do, and have already signed up for. Thanks Joe Donovan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, great inspiration, May 2, 2009

This is a very good book that not only lays out how to prepare and run your first marathon but also provides insights on how to achieve other goals in life. The book covers everything you need to know and does so in a way that psychs you up so that you want to run. There are also a number of great tips so that your first race won't be so frightening. This was a book that I really enjoyed reading.

begin carbo-loading two days before their long run or race to make sure their muscles store as much glycogen as possible. In practice, this means adding an extra portion of carbohydrates to every meal in your otherwise balanced diet. In addition, take in an extra glass of water because as the body increases its glycogen stores, it also increases the amount of stored water. "e;

Immediately prior to a long training run or the marathon itself, I make sure I am well-hydrated. I also eat a light, but high-carbohydrate, meal no later than two hours before the race or run. "e;
