5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide to Upholstery, January 24, 2001

I received this book yesterday and cannot put it down. The pictures, drawings and advice are fantastic. I am very interested in upholstery projects for my home and am ready to move from a "beginning Intermediate" level to "Intermediate". This book is just what I needed for more guidance. I have an extensive collection of upholstery books, and except for "Simply Upholstery" and the "Singer Upholstery Basics" books, I have been mostly disappointed with the books I have received as they were not helpful or showed unrealistic projects. This book is like being in an upholstery class with a smart, interesting teacher. I hope Dorothy Gates writes more books on this subject. I would certainly buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on upholstering, Make It This One, June 21, 2007

I took an upholstery class a few years ago and this book is by far the best in taking you through the steps of how to properly upholster furniture! If you only buy one book on upholstering, make it this one. I am now buying another copy of this book for a relative who'll be doing her own re-upholstering.

5.0 out of 5 stars not for the weekend warrior, June 7, 2010

This review is from: The Essential Guide to Upholstery (Paperback)
This a great book, although it is not for the weekend warrior of upholstery, instead it is for the detailed craft person or tradeperson interested in traditional upholstery and its core. The book covers traditional techniques and materials that currently may not fit the time constraints of the average person. As a tailor I understand the differences of traditional construction and quick techniques that yeild silimar results. The difference is time and materials used,(with traditional materials often being difficult to locate). If you are looking to learn upholstery as it was originally concieved this is an excellent book, one that will help you learn intimate techniques to get great looking results. As a reference book I would highly recommend this book, as a basic learning tool perhaps you should try singers BASIC UPHOLSTERY PLUS by steve cone. The marriage of the two will probably give you a better idea of how to tackle your projects and how the new materials used, are directly related to the traditonal ones.
