Good Medical Text,
By
This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
This was my medical school textbook for a four week module on hematology. What I liked most about the book is that it only presented essential information. The absence of superfluous text allowed me the time to regularly read the assigned chapters while also studying the rest of the material for this class and other classes. I also found the book to be relatively easy to comprehend. (However, this is definitely not on the layman's level, and a good requisite knowledge of a first year medical school curriculum is necessary before reading.) Virtually every pathologic aspect of hematology is covered in the text: hemopoietic development, anemias, lymphomas and leukemias, coagulation disorders, etc. It also covers some treatments for the various diseases and pathologic processes. This book was an integral part to my studying and understanding hematology. It will definitely sit on my reference shelf for years to come.

One of the best med school texts,
By iatrosom "sununit" (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
This is by far amongst the best medical school texts (not incl. board review stuff) out there. The 4th ed. covers all areas of hematology in a lucid, non-verbose style. I found it easy to read assigned sections for my Heme course in a timely and efficient manner. There is a good blend of pathophysiology and biochemical mechanisms essential to understanding disease processes; however, the presentation is straightforward. The text has frequent color cartoons, images, graphs and tables, which helped me visualize concepts. Moreover, modern diagnostics and treatment rationale are also adequately explaned. Overall, I am really glad i purchased this book, and plan to keep it for future reference.

This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
I loved this book. I found it extremely useful in my second year of med school and continued to reference it while reviewing for USMLE 1 and during my ward rotations. It is concise and has great illustrations. It has a nice balance of basic science materials and clinical correlations.

Lacks Details, Thorough explanations,
By Monkey Business (East Lansing, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
If you are already familiar with hematology and simply need a quick refresher, this is the book for you. However, as a medical student learning some of this material for the first time, I found this book to be lacking the detail and explanations necessary to establish a solid understanding of the subject. There are a couple nice figures, but overall I recommend sticking with a text like Robbins.

I am probably not the target audience, but I am newly diagnosed with leukemia, and I wanted to understand. This gave me a concise but wide-ranging view of the disease. It has all of the concepts that I need so far. I found a copy at my library and liked it so well that I purchased my own.

Excellent for med students!,
This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
I've been using this book for the heme block during my second year of med school and I'm loving it! It's very concise with good pictures - especially some good clinical pics so you know how to recognize the different brusing patterns. The chapters are very short and to the point. Each disease has a section with a bulleted list of clinical features and lab findings. Great for the busy med student but it may not be enough for an actualy hematologist.

A Great Study of Hematology,

This review is from: Essential Haematology (Essentials) (Paperback)
Hematology is one of the grab bag subjects at the Medical School I attend. A little is taught in Respiratory, a little in Renal, a little in Skin, bone and joint. This book is a great read with many high quality images. The pages are of a high quality glossy paper.
A British slant does predominate the book as the title Haematoology (instead of the States Hematology) implies. Discussions of treatment of certain disorders might deviate from accepted practice in the States, but the pathophysiology is covered in great detail and is universal knowledge. I will be keeping this book in my library since it is more than just one of those junk USMLE review books that show keywords and high yield pictures.

If you have to learn hematology (haematology), this is a decent book for the task. Personally, I don't enjoy the subject, but had to learn it. I'm glad I had this book to help.

I used this for our Haematology course in 2nd year medical school. It is an excellent text, easy reading, concise. For anyone needing just the basics in Haem, this is a great choice.
