The author offers a fresh new perspective an what makes marriages work that will jumpstart the efforts of every couples therapist. At its care is his suggestion that what is needed is some new math: where once we believed that two became one, and then, more recently, that two remained two, Hargrave, proposes that in strong marriages, two become three: "you", "me" and "we".

5.0 out of 5 stars Examining how we look at a marriage..., October 9, 2001
By
Mike Bishop (Arlington, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Essential Humility of Marriage : Honoring the Third Identity in Couple Therapy (Hardcover)
Using current research and his own work with couples, Dr. Hargrave challenged me to examine how I look at marriage and the marriages that come to my office. He offers a place to begin with damaged relationships and points to a direction to lead them. I found his examples and exercises useful in shaping my own beliefs about struggling marriages and useful as tools for those couples. I would recommend this work to beginning students of marital therapy, as well as experienced therapists reviewing their beliefs about how relationship integrity can be restored.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, November 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Essential Humility of Marriage : Honoring the Third Identity in Couple Therapy (Hardcover)
This book is a fantastic read and a must recommend for many couples I see as a professional counselor. The only part about this book that was not my favorite was the repetitiveness toward the last third of it. Sometimes I feel like many self help authors tend to fall into this trap. However, this book truly encapsulates a concept that every therapist can get on board with.
