Improved interface for terrific bible study collection,

Listed here as a book, this item is of course a CD ROM!There are some terrific books here, including old standards like the New Bible Commentary, which contains concise commentaries by some of the best evangelical scholars of the past century, the New Bible Dictionary, and the 4 volume New Testament Dictionary. But the volumes I find most useful are the innovative Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology and the New Dictionary of Theology. There are 18 volumes in the set. I could not have justified buying them separately, but in this format they are easily accessible, and less than 10% of what you would have paid in print form. Referencing the information has been made easy: when you copy an extract, a footnote is added automatically with full bibliographical details of the book from which it has been extracted. This new version is much easier to use than the original as it uses the superior Libronix interface, which allows you to search much more easily, and which recognises your scrolling mouse, etc. Owners of the original can update to this engine free of charge from Logos. If you do not own the original, I urge you to acquire this terrific collection. In some ways, it is better than having the books, as they are so much easier to use in the electronic format.

Great collection, but do your own research!,

(For disclosure, I am a PhD student in theology and an instructor in Scripture at a non-denominational Christian high school. I am Catholic, but obviously read a lot of Protestant scholarship and work with Protestant and Orthodox colleagues and students.)
I purchased this collection to enhance my ability to do class preparation and research on the go, with my fancy new ultraportable laptop. I also got BibleWorks. Having used the suite for about a year and a half, I have found it very valuable. I'm sure that people can be picky about the interface, but I am no techy and I find it easy to use. I find the highlight, note, and bookmark functions helpful. The resources I have found to be uneven. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is useful on a number of topics that one would not necessarily think of. The OT and NT background commentaries are awesome, containing a goldmine of information on even seemingly casual details in the text. Not everything is 100% accurate or hermeneutically/historically sound, but it serves its purpose very well not in explaining the text but in bridging the cultural gap. The NT dictionaries series contains many first-rate articles. The pocket dictionaries series I have used a little bit, but I know I will use a lot more if I do hardcore exegesis and come across some really obscure jargon. The other books in the library detract rather than add to it, in my opinion. The Hard Sayings collection is a great idea in theory, but I think we all need to compose one of those for ourselves, or at least for the passages that we encounter the most. I just found myself consistently disagreeing with the methods of interpretation used by the authors. My class was having trouble with one passage, so I decided just for the heck of it to read them what these authors had said about it. I have an extremely bright class, and they just tore it to shreds. They did better coming up with a sensible explanation on their own. When I consulted the New Bible Dictionary, I found a narrow, partisan explanation of the terms/figures I looked up. Comparing it to my HarperCollins Bible Dictionary at home, it was shallow. I could only imagine comparing it to Anchor Bible! Linking to the public domain KJV rather than the RSV (it is available, but for more $$$) also impairs its utility. It would be silly to say that all work on here is "conservative Protestant" scholarship. Much of it is done by reputable scholars of conservative Protestant inclination. Many of the resources are written in a balanced style one finds in academia (or at least what is good in academia). As a student of the Bible who wishes to draw from all sorts of good scholarship, and someone who teaches students who identify as strong Christians of several different inclinations and ideologies, this resource pairs very well with BibleWorks in doing my Scripture lesson-planning on the go. Just make sure to use your own principles and do your own research outside of this system from time to time.

I was taking a Missions in the New Testament class with Dr. Grant Osborne at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He said to the class that this piece of software was by far the best collection of scholarly Christian dictionaries and back ground commentaries ever assembled, and I think he may be right. You get the phenomenal four volume Dictionaries of the New Testament (Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, Dictionary of the Later New Testament, and the Dictionary of New Testament Background), as well as other outstanding dictionaries.
Did I mention that this CD-Rom also includes great resources like Hard Sayings of the Bible, the New Bible Commentary, the New Bible Dictionary and the IVP Bible Background Commentaries of the Old and New Testament? I own many scholarly resources on CD-ROM. And I would have to say that this is the one I use the most. I never make a sermon without consulting one of these great works. And there are more resources on this CD that I didn't mention. If you can only get one CD-ROM for your Bible study, MAKE IT THIS ONE!!! Rev. Marc Axelrod
