5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELENT IDIOMS BOOK, August 31, 2000
This review is from: Essential Idioms in English, New Edition (Paperback)
I had been searching for a good idioms book until I found this one. The examples are so helpful and tests at the end of each lesson really make you learn. The only thing I would ask for is to edit an audio cassette or cd in which all the explanations and examples ( and the tests too) can be heard so that the student can identify the idioms in context, in order to develope listening skills

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool!, October 3, 2004
By
This review is from: Essential Idioms in English, New Edition (Paperback)
What a great resource! This book is broken down into three sections: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. This has been a favorite of mine in all my classrooms: with 1st graders, with non-English learners, and with adults learning to read for the first time.

The phrase is listed, then a definition, then a couple of examples of how it's used. Following a list of ~10 phrases, there is a set of exercises that tests knowledge of the phrase and sentences to fill in the blank.

There is an answer key at the back to allow students independence to check answers.

This is a great teaching and reference tool for all classrooms.

4.0 out of 5 stars A satisfied ESL teacher, May 4, 2000

This review is from: Essential Idioms in English, New Edition (Paperback)
This is a great little book for teaching idioms. The book is divided into three sections, from elementary to advanced, which offers a great deal more versatility in choosing where to start. For every lesson, there are two different types of exercises as to insure that the idioms have been well learned. It is a great companion book for any ESL teacher or anyone interested in learning idioms. The only drawback is that some exercises do get repetitive after a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for a variety of levels, March 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Idioms in English, New Edition (Paperback)
I have used this book while working with people who speak English as their second language. The book is divided into three levels for beginner, intermediate and advanced. There is also a review section for practicing the previously studied idioms. Each chapter gives you definitions, multiple choice and fill in the blank exercises. This book can help any person who wants to improve their knowledge of idioms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Students made great progress using this book, May 21, 2000

This review is from: Essential Idioms in English, New Edition (Paperback)
I first taught English in China since 1994 and this book has been a wonderful resource. I continually recommend it to both students and teachers. As someone initially not familiar with teaching ESL and EFL, this book was my greatest resource.

My classes were two 50-minute sessions and I used this book during the first hour, teaching 6 idioms at a time. Every 3rd class I used the lessons as a quiz, adapting it to the Chinese culture.

The reason I liked this book of idioms over others, is because the idioms are practical and commonly used, rather than idioms such as "eager beaver". As a native English speaker, I had always instinctively used "in" and "out" without realizing the difference between the two words. Now I understand and can easily teach others.

However, there are some typos in the edition I was using. I'm sure those have been corrected in the newer version.

Dixson presents the material in ways that matter! This book is a great tool especially for those new to the field of ESL and EFL.

I've used this tool since I was a student. It was truly useful then and now my students enjoy it as much as I do, because it is easy to use and to understand. It has examples to simplfy and to make the idiom clear. therefore, if you're looking for an Idioms'book. Do not hesitate. This is it!!
