I've been a big Jimmy Thackery fan for years. I've seen him live. He is truly a master of his instrument. Please don't shun this for a 4 star rating. That's only because his vocal abilities are rather limited. It's bearable but his guitar work more than makes up for utilitarian vocals. If you are a blues/rock fan and/or play guitar and do not own any of his other works, you MUST have this CD in your collection. His tone, tremelo, delay, octave effect, wah, all used with mastery. I would go so far as to say he's THE Jimi Hendrix incarnate. Which is the highest compliment anyone could bestow.

this is a nice collection of jimmys better stuff, it's has everything from a country blues edge to a hard rock edge, my favorites are detroit iron and its my own fault with the wonderful lonnie brooks doing the vocals and doing them well.

I used to see JT in DC growing up. He was a licktionary and the nighthawks played great. But the yeas in bars have taken their toll--the sound is very second rate barroom blues (the rythm section is loose in a not good way), with not very good guitar tone (always was a problem when he played his V), and very poor material (there's lots of good songs to choose from that have never been recorded). He really knows a lot about blues so I would encourage him to go towards more traditional material and alternatives to 3 piece blooze rock--like jug bands, twelve strung finger picking etc.... b/c he really is a skilled guitarist

Bought this yesterday and have listened to all the songs. While Jimmy doesn't have the best voice in the world, it's not bad and his guitar more than makes up for it. This cd is perfect to listen to while driving. I especially like JIMMY'S DETROIT BOOGIE. The sound quality is very good on the live tracks too.

This is one of the best Blues CDs I've heard in a long time. This guy can play the electric guitar and has a very wide range in his singing and guitar abilities. I heartily recommend this to any music fan!

Essential Jimmy Thackery is one of the best overall presentations of rock blues that I've yet heard on cd. Every song on this cd is terrific and all songs fit together into one outstanding and captivating listening experience. Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers, along with Joe Bonamassa on Blues Deluxe, Eric Clapton on From the Cradle, and Stevie Ray Vaughan on In Step, set a very high standard for recent electric blues! Jimmy Thackery ranks very near the top in blues electric guitar playing. His licks will blow you away! (Stevie Ray Vaughan, now deceased, was a better guitar player than Jimmy Thackery.) The Drivers are a very tight sounding band with a great big beat. All of Jimmy's vocals on this cd are satisfactory to excellent. The sound quality of this cd is outstanding. You will think that you are sitting alone in the same room as Jimmy and his band as they play some of the best rock blues you've ever heard. If you've not that familiar with Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers, buy Essential Jimmy Thackery and fall in love with their hard-driving rock blues.
