This book contains 3-page summaries of 100 books. I've read the summaries of the ten or so books that I've read, and of another ten or so that I plan to read, and the summaries are all excellent -- intelligently and clearly written and, although all favorable (the author considers the books "essential," after all), they are balanced, containing negative criticism where appropriate. I have no qualms about the 100 that the author chose; the only essential books I can think of that are missing are those that have appeared since the book was published in 2003.
