Dean Martin "Cool Then, Cool Now" 2-CD/Book

Biography

It’s been nearly ten years since Dean Martin departed this earth, but the man’s stature as an artist and icon continues to grow. His importance to generations of music fans (not to mention aficionados of masculine cool) now far outstrips his former reputation as the tippler of the Rat Pack¹s tuxedoed triumvirate or Jerry Lewis’ crooning straight man. He was, simply ... Read more in Amazon's Dean Martin Store

Editorial Reviews

2014 collection from the legendary crooner, actor and entertainer. While he is now best known as a key member of the Rat Pack (along with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr.), Dean Martin's career included his string of movies with Jerry Lewis and a successful solo career. This compilation focuses on his solo recordings aimed directly at the heart.

Dean Martin was one of the best crooners ever; and he deserves so much better than this type of treatment. This is indeed the same CD release as last year's "Amore" CD--with just one difference: we get an extra track to make sixteen songs here and not the fifteen on "Amore." The extra track is "Everybody Loves Somebody," the fifth song on this CD. Thus Capitol is trying to fool us; with just a single extra song they expect people to buy what is otherwise the same album.

If you already have the CD entitled "Amore," I recommend simply downloading the one extra song on this album, "Everybody Loves Somebody." If you didn't buy "Amore" and are interested in this set of songs, get this CD and forget about "Amore" because you get one song less.

Five stars for Dino's magnificent singing (as always) but one star for this carelessly thrown together album equals a three star rating.

Dino, you should be getting so much more!

Yes, this is in fact the exact same release as last year's Valentine's release, Amore (which I've already reviewed), only with a different cover. Why do they keep releasing/rereleasing 1 or 2 disc sets, when long-time fans such as myself would love a 4-5 disc box set, covering both Dean's Capitol and Reprise recordings, AND with deluxe packaging (i.e. a sturdy cardboard cover and a nice, thick, well-written book, and NO cheap-looking jewel cases).

Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley get numerous deluxe box set treatments, so this is a plea from me to the Dean Martin estate: PLEASE!!??

2004's The Essential Dean Martin is his best-selling release EVER! You'd think that was a strong indication of Dino's popularity, so where's the box set?

Just what I was looking for. Nice collection. Dean sure knows how to sing and this collection shows that. Great price below $10.

The songs on this cd are great, but this new (2014) edition of this cd makes the third time that this cd has been released. The first version (2009) was originally entitled "Amore." About a year later, "Essential Love Songs" was released. Although the album cover art was different, it contained all of the 15 songs found on "Amore" plus the addition of "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometimes." This new (2014) version also has the 15 songs on the "Amore" cd but, instead of "Everybody Loves Somebody," (a song Dean did for the Reprise label) "Be an Angel" (a Capitol recording) is in it's place. I'm wondering if Capitol has somehow lost the permission to use Dean's Reprise recordings. Capitol also has re released, for the 4th time, "The Essential Dean Martin." The new Icon version of that cd also has the Reprise selections removed (see my review for a breakdown of the different versions of that cd) Maybe Capitol is just trying to "milk the cow" by re releasing the same cd over and over again with different songs. But, as I said before, all the songs on this cd are great and are well worth listening to regardless of which version of this cd you have.
