Book Description

October 13, 2005 0781750776 978-0781750776

The explosion of new information in recent years has challenged instructors of neuroscience to synthesize a diverse range of topics and present them in a way that's comprehensible to students. This first edition of Essential Neuroscience presents a solution, delivering the right level of detail and scope of information for medical students and residents.

Readers are presented with all of the basic neuroscience topics, but with a focus on the essential concepts and facts intrinsic to the practice of medicine. The result is a refreshing text that makes learning the subject matter simple yet meaningful.

The authors begin with the analysis of a single neuron, and then relate how neurons communicate with each other. Discussions progress to the anatomy of the spinal cord and brain, followed by a detailed examination of the sensory, motor, and integrative systems. This building-block approach helps students master the subject material and prepare for national board examinations.

Benefit from these valuable features:

  • Chapter-opening Learning Objectives help students focus on the most important information to take away from each chapter.
  • Summary tables and outlines organize chapter material into a high-yield format to help students review the material effectively.
  • Clinical scenarios in each chapter help students understand the clinical application of the concepts presented.
  • End-of-chapter review questions (both USMLE-style and course review) help students prepare for course and board exams.
  • Full-color art program includes over 400 illustrations.
  • A detailed chapter on neurotransmitters and implications of their malfunctions in mental disorders reflects recent developments in the field.
  • Chapter on Behavioral Disorders examines schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsion, all topics that are part of the USMLE.
  • Chapter on Cranial Nerves offers material tested on the USMLE.
  • Genetic abnormalities and malfunctions of the immune system are also discussed, where applicable.
  • Basic neuroscience terms and concepts are defined in an extensive end-of-book Glossary.

Essential Neuroscience is an ideal resource for medical students, neurology residents, and students who specialize in associated biological sciences.

Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 15-OCT-06, Volume 81, Issue 10, Kelly D. Flemming, MD, Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN -- "A concise yet comprehensive text of neuroanatomy and basic neuroscience that is appropriate for medical students, residents, and neuroscience graduate students...The illustrations are a highlight of this text. These are appropriately detailed but make simple, important points to complement the text. The color illustrations help illustrate neuroanatomic pathways and key anatomic relationships well. In addition, objectives, clinical correlations, clinical cases, and the glossary make this an excellent text for teaching beginning students in the neurosciences."-Mayo Clinic Proceedings (Overall Grading: Five Stars-Outstanding)

5.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive guide to Neuroscience, December 14, 2009
This review is from: Essential Neuroscience (Paperback)
It is a terrific book of neuroscience. Other textbooks on market are either too brief on neurophysiology or dwell too much on the field biochemistry. The best thing about this book is that it touches on every aspects of neurology comprehensively and specifically catered for medical students. The arrangement is coherent and it is easy to follow the flow of the book, which explained each part of the nervous system by its afferent and efferent connections. Diagrams are adequate and the pathway are vividly illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular overview of Neuroscience, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Essential Neuroscience (Paperback)
This is a spectacular textbook. It is very well written and very easy to understand, unlike many similar texts. The first few chapters provided a very detailed and essential introduction and orientation for med school neurology, and the book as a whole proved to be a spectacular reference. I very strongly recommend this book! Also, check out the Netter's neurology flash cards. The cards are flimsy and cheap, and the info gets way too detailed at times, but the info on the back of the cards reinforces a number of very important concepts in a very concise manner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Neuroscience, August 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book does cover the essential basics of neuroscience. It is not, however, detailed or in-depth, as some other reviewers would have you believe. This book would serve well as an introduction to neuroscience for an undergraduate course, or if one needs a brief review of neurophysiology/neuroanatomy.
