Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I first started reading about essential oils many years ago, the massive amount of information in the books available was overwhelming.  It was too much information - things a newbie just did not need to know yet, such as the in-depth (page after page) chemical composition of the oils.

I just wanted to learn which oils worked on what ailment and how to use them properly.  When I set out to write this book, I remembered that experience.   I decided  to present a thorough book about aromatherapy and how to use essential oils,  but not bog it down with technicalities that a beginner would  skip over to get to the "meat and bones" of the subject.

So, this is the book I have written - how to use essential oils safely, what they are good for, how they are made, and how you can apply their use in your everyday life.

For the essential oil guide (the encyclopedia) I decided to focus on the most-used essential oils.  Based on my research and experience, I settled on what I consider the top fifty-five oils.

From the Back Cover

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy: How to Use Essential Oils for Beauty, Health, and
Spirituality  is written in a personable and easy to understand style and covers all of
the important aspects of aromatherapy and essential oils.  Reads like a conversation
instead of a text book. Authored by a professional aromatherapist, it includes the
history of aromatherapy, how to use the oils, the chemistry of essential oils, how to
create a balanced blend, how essential oils are made, the carrier oils used in blends,
scent notes, a few questionable aspects of the industry, recipes to get you started,
and a complete encyclopedia of the top fifty-five oils.

As an old fashioned soap maker, I read this book because, while not directly about soap making, it is certainly about one of the most important aspects of it -- scent. So much of soap making and soap use is about sensory experience, and any serious soap maker will eventually become interested in aromatherapy because it plays a vital role in what we do. This book is a must have.

Perhaps the most useful section of this book to me is the essential oil guide -- an encyclopedic section that alphabetically lists each essential oil and gives both its common and botanical names. Citing its place of origin, method of extraction, and perfumery note, this section alone makes this book a required part of any soap maker's library. Already this has become a text that I refer back to each time down to make up a new recipe that includes essential oils. White's conversational tone makes this section accessible and memorable: he explains each oil's healing qualities and any precautions in using it as well as a brief, interesting summary of its history and lore.

White's professional and educational background in aromatherapy gives him an insider's knowledge into the industry which he shares. In reading this book, you'll learn how to read the labels and often trademarked levels of "certification" that essential oil sellers use in order to market their products. This book helps its readers to become smarter consumers and, in turn, better crafts people.

In days gone by, mentors taught their families, neighbors, and others interested in the arts of natural healing, as they were taught by their own mentors. Too much of that is lost these days in favor of science and academia. Essential Oils and Aromatherapy brings back that feeling of having a mentor as the author's writing style is such that it feels like he's in the room sharing his experience with me as he guides me in increasing my knowledge about essential oils. This very comprehensive volume covers fifty different oils in great depth, but in an easy to understand format.

It's a great source of information, whether you are just beginning to have an interest in essential oils or aromatherapy, or if you have moderate to advanced knowledge of the subject, but would enjoy a handy fingertip reference to double check contraindications, applications, or other facts about essential oils. Recipes and sample forms make it ideal for the budding aromatherapist. It is likewise a valuable resource for the essential oil hobbyist.

I was particularly interested in the section on scents and perfumery; reading it gave me a much better idea of ways to keep my home smelling fresh and inviting.

I enjoyed the opportunity to read an advanced copy and can hardily recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of essential oils, use them in their every day life personally, or who feel a calling to the healing arts of aromatherapy.

I sat down to read a few pages before bed and devoured it! Read it again the next day at a more relaxed pace. There is so much wonderful information in this book, I know I will be reaching for it many times as a reference guide. I wanted a basic knowledge of aromatherpy so that I can purchase my oils intellegently. I got that and so much more from Essential Oils & Aromatherapy - all in clear language without being bogged down with a lot of formulas and ratios. Mr. White obviously knows and loves his subject! I'm looking forward to more books from this author in the future!

This book is a wonderful reference guide - informative, easily understandable and has one of the main qualities I enjoy in good books - humor. I'm impressed as I have many books on essential oils and some of them are rather boring and dry. But this author really has done a great job of incorporating a large amount of information in a concise, easy to read format with wit, candor and an obvious passion for what he does. I've recommended it to clients and will be giving some as holiday presents this year. Well done.

This book was helpful in explaining that there isn't a recognized aromatherapy liscening in the US. Also he explained the detail on multi-level marketing of EO's and how one has only trademarked the terminology of being certified therapeutic grade. Until this book, I thought I was doing myself an injustice by buying less expensive pure quality EO's but now I know different. I also like the recipes from diffuser blends to household cleaning.

Great book! Very informative and useful. I am new to essential oils and aromatherapy and this is exactly what I was looking for. I will be using this book a lot more as I grow my skills. EO's have become my new obsession and I cant get enough. Who knew that such a basic instinctual thing such as smelling could have such a profound impact on every aspect of life.

If you are ever in the music city be sure to check out his store...or just order online from his site aromagregory.com. It is "The place" to buy essential oils in Nashville...literally the only place haha.

This guy knows his stuff!

P.S. - the patchouli he carries is divine, super dark and creamy. Ive blended it with Lavender and spearmint and got a mint chocolate type smell.

More About the Author

Gregory Lee White was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1967. He grew up in Bowling Green, Kentucky and began writing at the age of nine. "I remember the day was steamy, too hot to play outside. The boy across the street said to me, 'let's write some stories.' I thought he was sort of flaky, but I tried it anyway. It stuck."

At the age of twenty, Gregory moved to Nashville, Tennessee. In 1998, he learned to make artisan soap and later became a certified clinical aromatherapist. He and his partner continue to run the successful online soap business and retail store, aromagregory, to this day.

His book, CLUCKED - THE TALE OF PICKIN CHICKEN was released in 2010 and tells the story of the chicken farming industry by looking at its world through the eyes of a chicken.

More than a decade of experience in soap making and aromatherapy led to his 2012 book, MAKING SOAP FROM SCRATCH: HOW TO MAKE HANDMADE SOAP - A BEGINNERS GUIDE AND BEYOND (an Amazon Bestseller in soap making books). It was followed up in 2013 by his book ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY: HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BEAUTY, HEALTH, AND SPIRITUALITY.

He credits his mentor, professor and author Evelyn Thurman, for helping to get his first short story published in a magazine. When he was only 14, he and Thurman collaborated on a travel guide and puzzle book, which described the various home-sites of author Laura Ingalls Wilder. Out of print for many years, White rewrote and released LITTLE HOUSE SEARCH: A PUZZLE BOOK AND TOUR OF THE WORKS OF LAURA INGALLS WILDER in 2013, dedicating it to the late Miss Thurman.

"I started out as a fiction writer," says White. "Maybe when I am finished with everything I have to say in the non-fiction, 'how-to' genre - I'll get back to the characters in my head."
