5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Just purchased the 2010 Sony reissue of "The Essential Paul Simon". It is EVERYTHING past collections are not. The songs are not edited. And rather than program the songs in strict chronological order, the compiler has programmed the songs so they fit together as a body of work, rather than as a mere run-down of his most popular music.

True, it omits some...

2.0 out of 5 stars Far more later Paul Simon music than I need
I never could get into the Paul Simon releases from "Graceland" and beyond. I'm sure it's good music, but when I think of Paul Simon, I think of Simon and Garfunkel.

I have his long out-of-print CD called "Greatest Hits, Etc." which I truly love because I use to have the album on vinyl back in 1977 when the album came out. This double CD collection has just...

True, it omits some classics, as well as a few minor hits. But this is a minor quibble (I assume this has the same track listing as 2007's similarly titled Warner collection). "The Essential Paul Simon" is the finest collection of his music ever offered, bar none. And for those who are familiar with other reviews I've written, that is saying quite a lot.

My sixteen year old daughter loves Paul Simon, so I got this for her for Christmas. We have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, as it has some of Simon's greatest hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-hearing radio favorites, December 5, 2011

The sound quality on this CD is outstanding. I really love the second CD, but I was surprised at how much fun I had listening to the first CD, which includes many of his radio hits from the 70's and early 80's. During this period I was still listening to Simon and Garfunkel, and was not a big fan of "the new stuff". Part of the reason was the overplay some of these songs got on the radio. However, hearing these songs well-recorded and on a nice stereo system, rather than on some car radio or bar jukebox has made me realize why these were hits. I have listened to both CD's over and over after receiving them. A very rewarding purchase.

Paul Simon is a wonderfully creative, heart felt singer and song writer. Listening to this after not hearing him for years really got to me in a very good way. Don't miss it.

This double CD collection has just way too much Paul Simon music to me. It does have "Gone at Last" (with the now deceased Phoebe Snow) and "Late in The Evening" which I have as MP3's, but my collection of "Greatest Hits, etc." has "Have a Good Time" and "I Do it For Your Love" which are great songs to me.

I really can't stand his "Graceland" album, or anything much more from him through the eighties and beyond so "Greatest Hits, etc." remains a cherished classic to me.

I don't care for his African crap, and his songs like "You Can Call Me Al", "Graceland", "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes" and "Boy in a Bubble", just doesn't quite represent the sound of Paul Simon that I grew up with. I respect that he's an artist reaching out to try new things, but, if he had anything better those those turds he released in the eighties and beyond, he didn't quite get them promoted very well.

So, I guess I do prefer his more folk style work, which is similar of his work with Art Garfunkel.

There's no point in promoting "Greatest Hits, etc." It's been long out of print, however, for me, it locks in at his peak year for my approval of his work.
