5.0 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys; the best years
This collection was released by the boys' old US label, EMI. Now that they have moved to Atlantic, it's funny that an EMI collection should come out here. The songs are great, and whoever put this collection together has the same PSB favorites as I do. The opening cut, a soft version of Domino Dancing, is perhaps my favorite PSB track ever. 3.0 out of 5 stars A deceiving collection - opt for 'Discography' instead
The title of this CD - 'Essentials' - is deceiving. It's a collection of alternative mixes of the Pet Shop Boys' greatest hits. How can something be termed the 'essentials' when fully half of the tracks are "previously unavailable on compact disc"? There's a reason these takes aren't the ones that were released as singles: 'alternative' here can be thought of as a code...

I also love the extended version of Love Comes Quickly. I think it's a well thought out collection. The packaging, however, is a huge disappointment. I know the boys would not have approved of this packaging. It's very cheezy and looks like it was done by a designer who has no skills and just wants to impress everyone by making everything so elaborate. It looks junky!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mistitled..., October 28, 2003
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
I like the Pet Shop Boys--I've collected most everything they've produced, video, audio (even the vinyl) and other media, and from that, I'm sure you will gather that I do in fact like them. They were a popular London-based group when I was a teenager coming into adulthood and pop culture in London. The PSB have always been more popular outside of America; they still have a dedicated core of fans in America, but a much more extensive base of fans in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Whenever they have a new album or collection come out, I get it, automatically. I don't regret having bought this CD, as, without it, the collection would be incomplete. But I think it is mistitled. Every track on this Essential album is already on another piece I have, and all are less popular remixes of some of their more popular song (unless it is an obscure remix of an obscure song, which makes the title Essential even less applicable).

I must confess, I was disappointed. While it is a plus sometimes to have these tracks on one CD (for instance, when driving), it is nothing more than I might have made myself with a CD-R drive and little bit of time. I was a bit irritated, actually, to find that collection I'd purchased is in fact a compilation of tracks I already had, at an inflated price, made so by the fact that it was 'limited' (although, even given its 'limited' status, I notice each time I look that there are still copies available, and thus I ask myself -- limited to what?). I won't go so far as to claim betrayal, but it is a not-so-clever marketing stunt, and I am sorry that it has come to this.

As I said, I have all the albums of the Pet Shop Boys, and I do like them. But I can't honestly say I've played this CD since the first few days after I purchased it. And, based upon that, I would have to recommend passing over this one for all save the most devoted of fans. For them, this would be a five-star purchase. For others, there is nothing truly essential here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Collection for Fans, June 24, 2004
By
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
The title, "Essential," can be misconstrued easily - as this CD is not a greatest hits collection. As a result, I agree with other reviews who suggest that a casual PSB fan purchase "Discography" and/or "Alternative" which gather together their hits and b-sides, including most of the original versions found on "Essential." However, PSB completists will likely be satisfied with this CD, although perhaps not finding it a truly indispensable addition.

Several terrific remixes are here, such as "Love Comes Quickly" and "Being Boring." In addition, "Opportunities" has a spoken word coda not included on the hit radio version. Best of all is the alternate version of "Domino Dancing," which strips away the Latin percussion of the original and draws out the inherent sadness of the song. Of course, many of these remixes and alternate versions are now available on the remastered versions of the PSB's original six CDs. Nevertheless, I highly recommend "Essential" for hardcore PSB fan. It's just a fun collection.

Packaging: The interesting liner notes are by long-time PSB collaborator, Chris Heath, who wrote "Pet Shop Boys, Literally." The cover, unfortunately, is flimsy cardboard that fits inside a sleeve - the CD holder invariably gets stuck when inserted into the cover, leading to inordinate wear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, and excellent compilation, May 1, 2003

There a couple of great remixes that were released on this CD that were a long time coming. Love Comes Quickly (Dance Mix) had only been released previously on vinyl, and I believe it still to be the best Love Comes Quickly remix put out, and a proper example of truly "extending" the original arrangements of the song. The song still sounds like the original, but better.

Chris Heath is mistaken however in his liner notes. This is NOT the first time that Domino Dancing (Alternative Mix) has been released on CD. It was also on the original Domino Dancing CD Single (import).

4.0 out of 5 stars "EMI Essential Series" of CDs, not an album title "Essential"., April 25, 2009
By
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
This CD was part of a limited edition packaging by EMI called "The Essential Series". All had the same cutout on the sleeve, all were greatest hits compilations from the EMI vaults. I have a couple of the series. That said, the cd is worth buying for the remixes. Many of the mixes were never available commercially in the US (where this was released).

3.0 out of 5 stars A deceiving collection - opt for 'Discography' instead, October 26, 2007

The title of this CD - 'Essentials' - is deceiving. It's a collection of alternative mixes of the Pet Shop Boys' greatest hits. How can something be termed the 'essentials' when fully half of the tracks are "previously unavailable on compact disc"? There's a reason these takes aren't the ones that were released as singles: 'alternative' here can be thought of as a code word for "just not up to snuff with the version we released as a single."

If you want the Pet Shop Boys at their best, go for Discography: The Complete Singles Collection - that collection represents 'the essentials,' not this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but Necessary, June 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
This is certainly not the best PSB collection, however true fans and PSB collectors must have it. Extended versions of Being Boring and We All Feel Better in the Dark are worth the CD price. Those are two cuts I've been waiting for on CD forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best of early PSB!, June 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
This is an excellent choice for people wanting to be introduced to classic Pet Shop Boys. Most of the songs on this disk fans have heard many times before, but the mixes are different and unique. It recaptures the early experience perfectly and concentrates on the less mainstream side of the Boys. Sure, West End Girls and Opportunities were big hits in the US, but songs like It's a Sin and others from Actually were left off in favor of less known tracks to US listeners. It's far better than the two Disco remix collections, too. For straight hits, though, Discography is still the only choice.

I know, this is not like a greatest hits complilation, but it sure is like a greatest mixes. This is a fine collection for completists and true fans. The extended verion of Being Boring is here (beautiful), the great alternative version of Dominoe Dancing and, the big payoff, the extended verion of the trippy b-side, We All Feel Better in the Dark. Excellent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, I'm a collector..., June 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential (Audio CD)
PSB are one of my favorite bands, and this disc has some fantastic collector's items (notably, the Extended mix of Being Boring and We All Feel...) but it's a real mixed bag. That's My Impression and It Couldn't Happen Here are two of my LEAST favorite PSB tracks, and this isn't the greatest mix of West End Girls, of which there must be hundreds. If you want a good collection, get Discography or better yet, Alternative. If you want a great album, get Behavior. Unless you HAVE to have that remix of Being Boring (like I did), leave this one alone.
