I've read most of Maxwell's stuff and I'm not a huge fan. This book is another in his series of "17" books, and I find that once again he could have combined most of them and made it the five or six essential qualities of a team player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but website FAILED TO DELIVER, January 23, 2002
17 Qualities of a Team Player is an easy read chocked full of great quotes and stories on each of the qualities mentioned in the book. The book has a quote, a story and then a brief evaluation of what he is trying to convey to the reader. I believe Maxwell's interpretations are right on the money and a very refreshing way of looking at teamwork, a skill that is essential in today's economy and future economy, which promises to be more based on social skills and business networks.

Mr. Maxwell uses 17 qualities to describe a successful team player: Adaptable, Collaborative, committed, communicative, competent, dependable, disciplined, enlarging, enthusiastic, intentional, mission conscious, prepared, relational, self-improving, selfless, solution oriented, tenacious.

I believe the key ingredient in getting long-term value out of this book is to highlight the quotes/stories you love and integrate them into your daily life. Practice what you read if it ties in with your VALUES. I believe that the values / qualities expressed in this book provide a practical guide to achieving personal fulfillment in your career, marriage and social relations.

I gave the book a 4 star rating because the website, which has assessment tests, is not up and running until February yet I was able to buy and read the book well before such date. If a publisher/author is going to incorporate such tools/add-ons into a book they should make sure they are operational and running 100% effectively by the time the book is published. To me, that is business 101. Perhaps Maxwell should learn something about that! After all, commitment and vision were two of the qualities he espoused in his 21 qualities of a leader book. Practice what you preach John!

I've read most of Maxwell's stuff and I'm not a huge fan. This book is another in his series of "17" books, and I find that once again he could have combined most of them and made it the five or six essential qualities of a team player.

The book is laid out systematically: name of the quality, feel-good story, 3-5 points of explanation, 3-5 points of application, next quality. It's chocked full of stories and quotations, so if you're looking for anecdotes, this is the book for you. It's a very easy read.

It's not a bad book and there are a few points that I found useful, but for the most part it's just a run-of-mill Maxwell book. He's more of a storyteller. If you're looking for a good book on improving teamwork, I would recommend Patrick Lencioni's "Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Field Guide for Leaders, Managers, and Facilitators".

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teamwork Resource for Organizations, October 24, 2003
By
Maxwell's book has many simple lessons for leadership, however I was disappointed to learn that the website cited in this book did not work. After a search on the internet I did locate the site under a different URL title -- http://www.lawsofteamwork.com/

John Maxwell has many valuable insights into organizational leadership and principles of teamwork that many of my graduate students enjoy. This book relates several good stories about the importance of teamwork, including one about former MLB player Reggie Jackson and Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver. The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player is a great resource and a fast read for those interested in learning more about leadership and teamwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking yet very easy to read, February 18, 2004

I thought that the book was very easy to read and it's shorter length makes it very accessible to those with very busy lives.

I really enjoyed the little stories and the descriptions of the elements that compose the 17 qualities were very well written. The main thing I enjoyed about the book was not that it taught me a lot of things I didn't know, but that it put those things together in a more coherent picture and made me ask myself some hard questions about how I can be a better team player and whether or not I've neglected some areas.

I find I perform at a much higher level when I keep these sorts of ideas in mind as I plan my tasks. This book is small enough to travel well and profound enough to keep pushing me to higher levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE QUALITIES OF A STRONG TEAM PLAYER., January 17, 2002

I enjoyed this book for the wisdom it contained. Whether one is part of an office team, a charitable organization or on a sports team, it is not always as easy as one might think to develop strong teamwork. There are those who can never master the feat of being a team player and those, if you are fortunate to find them, who excel both as a team player and independent worker. The author has demonstrated the 17 essential qualities of a strong team player. Learning specific skills can be much easier than learning new habits or changing negative personal qualities which have often developed over a lifetime. Employers should remember to take that fact into consideration during the hiring process; you need to match an individual's qualities to the job to achieve the desired result. Not everyone possesses the essential qualities to be a team player. To the book's credit, it contains accurate and proven theories on creating a strong team. The author bases his theories on such factors as self-descipline, competence and being prepared to adapt and change your ideas and actions.

The minor downside of the book is the various quotes by well-known successful people. They are interesting but they have appeared in print so many times before that they come across as "classic cliches". Also, the book is relatively short and it would have been twice as interesting if the author had expanded on his words of advice in more detail. Overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives. The book is well worth reading, and the reader will likely find the stories quite inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. Get it, read it, keep it., September 21, 2002

This is an absolutely fabulous book. It's also required reading for every member of our company -- Urangatang.Net -- a web design consortium. This book describes THE lifestyle that will lift your company, your employees, and even your family members to the highest level of success. It is scripturally sound and downright fabulous. And to it, I say "Amen!"

4.0 out of 5 stars 17 Essential Qualities, July 13, 2011
Maxwell lists and explains 17 qualities that are key to being a great team player in the workplace and elsewhere. These are great qualities to strive for, though (as we've written about) understanding your personality and which qualities you need to work on most, are essential steps to success. Once you do know yourself, Maxwell's tips can help you become the better businessperson you want to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book But Where Is The Self Assestment, July 14, 2003
By
Gary Levitan (LONG ISLAND< NY) - See all my reviews
I am a High school Coach and found this book to be very helpful. It applies not only to the business world but to all athletes. the one problem that I have is that I went online to do the self assestment and there is no such website. Thats not good considering I was going to teach this book to my athletes and then have them work online to work on their skills. Don't offer something then not have it available. thats false advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to use to facilitate team discussion, February 18, 2007
I used the 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player as a book to use for team discussions affirming or confirming how the team would operate. The chapters are a quick read and the qualities described supporting a successful and harmonious workplace cover most required behaviors of a good team member.

While John Maxwell's material is mostly from non-profit experiences, the stories and quotes are relevant and applicable to corporate America just as much as in the non-profit settings. In some cases my team offered criticisms of the examples, but even in those cases the opportunity to have the team discuss and agree on the essential attributes of teamwork was a success I would not have achieved without the support of the book. I have not used the websites referred to in the book.
