3.0 out of 5 stars Good and dirty music from a 1960's rock band
A warning sticker about the lyrics should be included on the packaging of this C.D. The Raiders do use the "F" word in "Louie, Louie." "Crisco Party" depicts an orgy. "Over You" is about murdering a woman who rejects a man. And the classic "Hungry" has previously censored lyrics, about getting stoned, restored. Yet,...

The First time I heard this Cd when our Local Library had a copy and what an Improvement it was over the Double Cd of The Legend Of Paul Revere not only did they pick the best for this one Cd but the Mastering of this sounds so much better !!!! I was also very suprised of 2 tracks that were put on here the Alternate version of Hungry with the explicit lyrics and the Extended Version of The Great Airplane Strike all the hits and album favorites are on here the only problem is that they left off 2 of my favorite songs of this era like There She Goes off of Midnight Ride and Undecided Man ( which sounds like a Poor Mans Version of Eleanor Rigby) off of Spirit of 67 but other than that a Cd you gotta have in your Selection now Im waiting for a Part 2 of this Cd of the later hits!!!

What a brilliant american group very listenable and very poppy, the songs featured are altenative versions or unreleased all their major hits are on here well the ones that made the hot 100 in america at the time. England never welcomed them in the charts and they never sold here really either such a shame that a lot of people missed out on their stuff at the time the compilation comes with a very very informative book lots of wonderful pictures and passing words from the group members themselves you would be a fool not to buy this wonderful collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Party!, September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
This CD proves that good party music is timeless. Mark Lindsay's vocals and the strong instrumental and vocal support from the rest of the band has lost nothing of its fervor or drive, with age. The music feels as fresh to me now, as it did when I first heard them at the age of 10. An excellent compilation of 'the Raiders' during their heyday. My nieces and nephews became 'Raiders' fans listening to my scratchy vinyl collection; we have regained them in this CD and other re-releases. I wish material from 'Collage' was also available ...

Regarding the playlist: the tracks listed as 'previously unreleased', aren't - I have them on the 'Pickwick' label, 12-inch vinyl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like it, January 8, 2002

This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
Yes, I grew up in the 60's and loved the garage rock sound from a number of bands. I started listening to Paul Revere & the Raiders after hearing "Just Like Me" sometime back in 1965. This collection is great because 1) It contains all the hits up until "Him Or Me" 2) Strong album tracks like "Louise" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" are included 3) You get the 5 minute plus version of "Great Airplane Strike" 4) You get the uncensored version of "Hungry" 5) Two songs sung by Fang are included. Throw in a few songs previously not on any PR&R album, and there you have it - you have the Essential Ride. Now, we need a follow-up, an Essential Ride II with all the other hits, starting with "I Had a Dream" along with some more album tracks. By the way, the version of "Louie, Go Home" included here is the one that appears on the "Midnight Ride" album. Even if you have the 2 CD Anthology, you may find a place in your collection for The Essential Ride as well.

Yet, The Raiders also sang "Kicks won't bring you peace of mind." It's hard to figure!. These guys make The Rolling Stones sound like choir boys.

Musically, The Raiders play as well, if not better, than any other 1960's rock band (Except on Stepping Stone - It's not quite as powerfull as The Monkees in concert version from 1967). The disc features good sound and linear notes. Also, (almost forgot) - their great mid-sixties hits are also on this collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars good thing!, June 24, 2009

This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
-if you are a raiders fan from the early days, this collection has all the great songs the raiders did before they got manipulated and 'slicked up' by the 'corporate zombies'. there probably is something to like about the latter period, but not much for me...

this is most of the original band too! members changed frequently after about 68, taking some of their special 'pizzazz' with them. the story of paul revere switching from piano to cheap "organ" was sad too...what a shame! of course, everybody went for that cheap organ sound (excepting felix cavaleire (sp?) until procol harum, with 'whiter shade of pale' -this is a really, really, good collection showcasing a great band at its' zenith, before the genius "suits" stepped in (same old story) -get it! you won't be sorry!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Correction to reviewer's notes, February 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
Paul Revere and the Raiders recorded "Stepping Stone" before the Monkees (who copied their version practically note for note) but did not get it released before the Monkees did. Their version of "Louie Louie" hit it big in the Northwest BEFORE the Kingsmen's version. Both bands recorded it within one week of each other in the same studio! So "dutifully" had nothing to do with it--they were FIRST!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great compilation CD, August 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
Believe it or not, I'm a "why bother" member of Generation X, and I love Paul Revere and the Raiders! My interest in these droll 60's rockers mainly came from listening to my dad's old 45's of "Hungry", "Good Thing", and "Kicks" back in the 80's. Plus, their concerts and TV show were a bang-up job being dressed in their Revolutionary-era costumes (from what my folks told me, of course). They look like a zany bunch of guys (almost could pass as the Cheap Trick of the 60's), and their music seems to reflect that! I'm so glad that I can now hear all of their great classics and more in crisp digital format! Wish they had included "Undecided Man" on this album though.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album rocks!, June 13, 1998
This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
Paul Revere and the Raiders have long been known for their string of hits in the 60s and early 70s but not as many know what a party band this group was. Essential Ride reflects the energy of their live performance and also throws in some interesting pieces previously either unreleased or released in a different version. You'll even hear the original lyrics to "Hungry" and the psychedelic version of "Great Airplane Strike". Sit back and enjoy or stand up and rock--either way you'll enjoy this insight to one of America's greatest pure rock'n'roll bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have, March 12, 2002
This review is from: Essential Ride 63-67 (Audio CD)
This CD is a must have for the essential Paul Revere fan. Many Recordings are not found on the Columbia sets. It proves why this band was one of the top dance bands in the nation of the sixties.
