Milsap's "40 #1 HITS" collection makes this one obsolete. That one includes everything you'll find here except "All's Fair in Love and War" & "Turn That Radio On", & does include many hits that should be included on any "essential" Milsap collection. Well worth the extra money.

Ronnie Milsap has always been the blackest sounding of the white male country singers- and this collection showcases the true talent and versatility of one of country's best.

The track selection is right on the mark. A wonderful overview of an extraordinary career. No single disk could possibly cover every Milsap hit, and that is a testament to the mans incredible body of work, but this disk does a good job.

Some will quibble with the selection, as some of the hits were left off and some of the lower ranking ones were included- but what is represented here is the "cream" of Ronnie Milsap.

"Lost In The 50's" is presented here in the clearest mix I've heard, "Any Day Now" is included in a very clear mix.

Each song is country, but the styles vary and isn't that what we want when reviewing the "essential" works of an artist so prolific as Mr. Milsap.

This set is magic. I reccomend it heartly.

Ronnie Milsap is one of the most productive artists RCA ever had with continuous chart appearance between 1973 and 1992. This Essential Collection is comprised of hits between 1979 and 1992 (a second volume of the earlier hits was promised but never released). Of the 20 recordings found here, 16 made number one on the country charts. Even more impressive is the variety of styles Milsap adopted in his music. He gets very soulful on a remake of Barbara Lewis' "Snap Your Fingers" and nostalgic on the doo-wop flavored "Lost In The Fifties Tonight." Hard blues gets a nice workout on "Stranger In My House." And just when you think he was getting firmly rooted in straight pop like "Any Day Now" or "Make No Mistake (She's Mine)", he would return to his honkytonk roots on a ditty like "All Is Fair In Love And War." With so many hits, it is not surprising that this Essential collection avoids album cuts and previously unreleased tracks. What you do get is a consistently entertaining, well-balanced set that is far superior to the numerous 10 cut sets RCA had already released.

Since this collection's release, a double disc 40 number one hits retrospective has come out. It is the best Milsap overview available. If you can only afford one disc however, this is the set to get.
