A Well-Selected Collection,
By
This review is from: Essential Scud Mountain (Audio CD)
This collection of Scud Mountain Boys' material hits most of the highlights from the SMB catalog. There are no bonus or unreleased tracks and the 19 tracks included on this set are essentially divided evenly between 'The Early Year' (which pairs the first two releases 'Pine Box' and 'Dance the Night Away' on a double cd) and the brilliant 'Massachusetts'. The music on this disc (and all the SMB output as well as later incarnations such as the Pernice Brothers, Chappaq. Skyline, and Joe Pernice) is relaxing, depressing, literate and beautiful. Difficult to place in any one genre, it's essentially a combination of alt country/folk/pop--acoustic based music with great melodies and terrific singing. Overall, 'The Essential Scud Mountain Boys' is an excellent overview of three great albums. Some gems are missing (particularly "Van Drunk" and "Glass Jaw" from 'Massachusetts' and "Sangre de Cristo" from 'The Early Year') and for the price it would probably make the most sense to buy both 'The Early Year' and 'Massachusetts' instead. However, if you have neither and want a great 73 minutes of music, this is an excellent place to start.
