Editorial Reviews

Review

`Expertly translated and assembled, it includes a very helpful and interesting table of themes in addition to the article-length introduction by Father Doyle. Most naturally suited to college, university, and seminary holdings, it is highly recommended for parish, public, and personal libraries as well.' --Catholic Library World

I was blown away by Augustine's Confessions and wanted to find a good follow-up book for spiritual reading.

I have read thousands of books in my life. This recent read has moved to the top of my list. Augustine organizes your mind so you can understand the most complex theology. He reaches into your heart and makes you cry. He speaks to you plainly and makes you laugh. And you'll learn more from this one book than you have from many hundreds of others. It is a wonderful book for morning prayers and meditations -- to see and feel the hand of God upon you.

Skillfully and accessibly translated into modern English by Father Edmund Hill, Essential Sermons is an astutely chosen selection of the sermons of Augustine of Hippo (354-430), who served as bishop of Hippo in North Africa after his conversion to Christianity. Featuring a new introduction and notes by Father Daniel Doyle, Essential Sermons reveals a level of genius and insight that transcend his era. "Man's first ruin was caused by love of self. I mean, if he hadn't loved himself, and had put God before himself, he would have wanted always to be subject to God, and he wouldn't have turned away to disregarding God's will and doing his own. That, after all, is what loving oneself means, wanting to do one's own will. Put God's will before all that; learn to love yourself by not loving yourself." Especially recommended for church and seminary library collections

I was blown away by Augustine's Confessions and wanted to find a good follow-up book for spiritual reading. This book of sermons was perfect. The sermons themselves are direct, engaging, challenging, and sometimes endearingly quirky. The translation is modern and extremely readable, and the book is well edited making the sermons even more accessible. These sermons have given me an appreciation for the lesson "Take up your cross and follow me," introduced me to a number of early church martyrs I'd never heard of before, and answered the question, "Why do men have nipples?" Augustine's sermons deserve to be more widely known and read. Get this book!

This is a wonderful, though condensed version of several of Augustine's important sermons. A collection of his Sermons and Scripture Commentaries would probably put you out by $1000.
I do like having this, because it gives good occasion to read some good sermons in the appropriate time. If only he were preaching regularly, and I could go to his own Mass, this might be as close as I could get.
Also, Augustine's Sermons are not quite as difficult, if not as cumbersome, as some of his other works.
The Confession is certainly a beautiful piece, but even Essential Sermons can be easier to read, because the topics are condensed, while still maintaining his signature lyrical style.
Most of all, I think there really is something in here for everyone.

So far so good. The Preface is detailed and informative. I carry this book in my Kindle which makes very easy to read. I hope to receive info on sermons and how to prepare them, as well as delivery.
