4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for general song writing tips.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy but lacking
This is a handy book. It's small and easy to carry around and you can pretty often find what you're looking for in it. It's good if you're browsing for ideas and it has a small section on basic rhyming schemes and useful hints for beginner songwriters.
There are some serious drawbacks though. The obvious one is that it's not very big and doesn't have all that many...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for general song writing tips., August 8, 1999

While this didn't necessarily have the greatest amount of information, and not all the words were cross-referenced back to each other all the time, it was still a very useful tool. Since it's small, you can carry it around easily. The abscence of more complicated words was rationalized by the fact that most songs would sound odd with scientific references and other such words in the lyrics. It only had the most used words, but there were plenty of them. However, I found the greatest value in this book at the very beginning within about the first ten pages. These pages provided an excellent tips section for song writing in general that has the best list of 10 useful tips I've ver seen. I lost this book, and I will probably buy it again (mostly for the tips section, but also because it is a great reference you can carry anywhere).

Every songwriter who uses rhyme has moments of searching for the right word. This dictionary is perfect: easy to carry, very easy to use, and chock full of good words. I find that looking for the right word can also stimulating song ideas.

I've tried other, more technical books, for poets. But I've found this to be at once sufficient and comprehensive for my songwriting.

You never can tell,
So use it well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy but lacking, January 23, 2004
This review is from: Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary : The Most Practical and Easy-To-Use Reference Now Available item #16637 (Paperback)
This is a handy book. It's small and easy to carry around and you can pretty often find what you're looking for in it. It's good if you're browsing for ideas and it has a small section on basic rhyming schemes and useful hints for beginner songwriters.
There are some serious drawbacks though. The obvious one is that it's not very big and doesn't have all that many words. Another is that while it lists words in different tenses, it does for some reason not appear to have any words in plural listed. It has 16 rhymes for the word "star", but "stars" (or any words that rhyme, like cars, bars, etc.) is nowhere to be found.
So while this is a handy book for the beginning lyricist, people who are really serious about songwriting should probably go for something more extensive.
But then again, it's only 6 bucks. And for 6 bucks it's not a bad book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-use Pocket Dictionary For On-the-road-musician, July 25, 2004
This review is from: Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary : The Most Practical and Easy-To-Use Reference Now Available item #16637 (Paperback)
It's important to mention, that this physically small dictionary has its limitations. The dictionary doesn't cover every aspect on rhyming. But it's not its generally purpose. The book will come in handy for those who want a fast rhyme (or half rhyme) to finish his/her lyrics in a good way. It also have some practical information on songwriting in general. I like this practical book for what it is. Even though it's small, its potential are huge!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for jogging your memory, but nothing more, May 19, 1999

This review is from: Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary : The Most Practical and Easy-To-Use Reference Now Available item #16637 (Paperback)
While this book has been incredibly useful in times of writer's block, is it not very thorough, nor in-depth. For instance, under "Ordinary," the author was generous enough to include common (English) names - Mary, Perry, Jerry, and Terry. What about Barry, Sherry, Larry, Carrie, Gary, or Harry? In addition, there are not very many entries, requiring you to mentally try to conjure the name of a rhyming word and look /that/ up. However, the format is decent. It's worth your money, if you don't plan to use it very often.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've seen, January 5, 2006
This review is from: Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary : The Most Practical and Easy-To-Use Reference Now Available item #16637 (Paperback)
This is one of the best rhyming dictionaries around. I love the way it is organized. It also has all kinds of tidbit information in the front of the book that other rhyming dictionaries do not. there maybe larger desk versions of rhyming dictionaries but as far as pocket sizes go this is the best.

As a songwriter I found this of very little help. There are SOOO many more possibilities for rhyme in contemporary music that this book is really only good if you want to know the perfect rhymes for a word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to "borrow", February 18, 2008

This review is from: Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary : The Most Practical and Easy-To-Use Reference Now Available item #16637 (Paperback)
I purchased the Essential Songwriter's Rhyming Dictionary for my son, a budding songwriter. It seems to be good enough for his dad, a seasoned songwriter, to borrow pretty consistently. They have both found it useful and are singing its praises!

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version doesn't work, June 12, 2011

I am right in thinking that there is no way you can look up a word

All I get is a message that my search cannot be completed because it has not yet been indexed
What does this mean?

1.0 out of 5 stars Almost Useless as Kindle eBook, March 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There is no way to input the word you want and go straight to it, or if there is, I couldn't find it. There is no instruction on how to use this book on the kindle. An ebook of this type (dictionary) must have a way to get straight to the word 'Blue' rather than laboriously going through every page, only to find that you now have to go to 'do' to find the rhymes. The only other way was to take a stab at a location number - painfully slow.

If it is too much to hyperlink every word, one of two simple things could alleviate this problem: A page at the front with links to the letter of the alphabet you want. or "A = location 135" "B =" etc. Not ideal though.

To be fair, the book looks really useful, I like it's simplicity, and it's content. I would give the paper copy a 4 star rating, but I have the eBook. I think Amazon needs to separate reviews for Paper books and eBooks.
