Speak in front of the room with zero fear & maximum enjoyment

This book is a powerful antidote to the Toastmaster mentality!
Speak Out Loud Now & Enjoy It! could have been another way of titling this lovely book. Doreen Hamilton leads us gently with numerous anecdotes (she's American) on the path of speaking to groups of people aka Public Speaking. Instead of stressing the Performance aspect (so proned by Toastmasters), she shows us that we need to relate to and love our audience first of all, person by person. Content is the second task for the speaker; Relating to the persons in the audience is the first task and duty of the sincere speaker.
After describing the details of her 7 Step Process, Doreen encourages us to practise the relational attitude she puts forward so enthusiastically. We are invited to create our own Practice Groups or better, if available in our area, to join a Speaking Circle, a new approach developed by Lee Glickstein from San Francisco - that very nice and intelligent part of California.
This is the most loving, intelligent and practical way to approach public speaking. And it works! It works like a dream come true! I know this because I've done it myself!

I've studied public speaking for years, and was delighted to discover this book. Dr. Hamilton's step-by-step method is very clearly presented which makes it easy to read, yet contains material that is thought-provoking and life changing. She points out that stage fright at the deepest level is not really fear of speaking but fear of being ourselves in public, and gives you great tools to work at that level. I highly recommend it and suggest reading it several times!

I found Essential Speaking: The 7-Step Guide to Finding Your Real Voice, by Doreen Hamilton to be a wonderful book--ostensibly about public speaking, but also about learning how to be true to yourself while in the presence of people listening to you.

Statistically, fear of public speaking is said to be higher on the chart than fear of death. Indeed, for many, public speaking is the same as death. Doreen Hamilton, a psychotherapist who understands human depths and motivations very well, wrote this book based on her experience of facing her own fear--terror, even--of public speaking. A high achiever and graduate of Toastmasters, she came to realize that simply putting a better face on her speaking achievements didn't bring her closer to her heart. Her original desire to share good things with an audience had been replaced by a look-good mask. This wasn't enough for her: she wanted the real thing--real answers, real connection.

Setting about to discover the true source of her own public-speaking fears, she found fear of being seen and criticized to be the real problem, and learning to be open-hearted and connected to be the cure. Based on her personal understanding, she has since helped many other people traverse the mountain path of their own fears, and break through joyfully. Her book, based on her work with Speaking Circles, has the ring of truth from one who has lived it and transcended it, and now helps others.

In providing seven essential steps (starting with "Be Silent"); illuminating case histories and stories from her own life; instructive and evocative writing; and the compassionate heart of a therapist, Hamilton's book speaks to the universal human need to be recognized, appreciated, and encouraged to speak confidently from the essence of who we are.

Essential Speaking by Dr. Doreen Hamilton is a unique book on public speaking. By having us focus first and foremeost not on what the speaker says but who she is-- i.e., her essential self, her core, her inner voice-- Dr. Hamilton literally transforms the paradigm for authentic speaking which makes Essential Speaking nothing less than evolutionary.
The book begins by encouraging us to dive right into our fears of public speaking, to go through them to the other side, and to discover freedom from fear. This is very powerful and differs from so many books on speaking that don't ask us to face the fear head on. As a clinicial psychologist, the author is well-trained to explain the origin and roots of fear, shares her personal experiences, tells stories and gives us exercises so we can practice and have our own discoveries and insight.

The heart of the book can be found in the chapters that describe a seven-step process, which tells us exactly how to speak from a place of "Being," our essential self. In so doing, she builds potent foundation for speaking: the ground of silence. She tells us how to create a safe and supportive environment in which to focus on ourselves in relation to our audience, demonstrating that out of this relaxed relationship the right words and gestures spontaneously emerge. As a result, you will deliver a speech that you will need to express and that your audience will need to hear. This is "Essential Speaking." It is transformational for both speaker and audience.
Essential Speaking by Dr. Doreen Hamilton is for you, whether you're a beginner just or a professional looking to speak from your essence.
