5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to start training surgical skills, August 9, 2006
This review is from: Essential Surgical Skills with CD-ROM, 2e (Paperback)
I am a first year medical student interested in surgical specialities and I was looking for a book that teaches the basic skills in surgery. Today medical schools gives poor attention to that subject and this book fills a void. It allowed me to start my training in an early stage. The text is very clear and the illustrations are excellent! Comes with 2 CD-ROM that help to visualize the procedures. Excellent buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction for Medical Students, July 24, 2007
This review is from: Essential Surgical Skills with CD-ROM, 2e (Paperback)
This book provides a great basic introduction to surgical skills including scrubbing, surgical instruments, obtaining hemostasis (topical, electrocautery and free vessel ligature), an overiview of needle and suture material design and tabulated uses of suture options. Principles of knot-tying (2-handed and instrument-tie for both left and right-handed surgeons) and several basic suture techniques (simple, vert. & horiz. mattress, running, running/lock, intracuticular, deep/subcuticular and purse string) are illustrated nicely and easy to follow. The section on skin flaps is a real asset to the book. It covers fusiform, advancement, rotation, note, bilobe, and rhombic flaps as well as Z-plasty. The CD-rom has several clinical demonstrations of flaps in real patients. I recommend this to any medical student, regarless of your year in school, to get a head-start on some of the skills you will use in the OR during your rotations.

Yes, a must to have for all people who wants to make a life at the Operating Room or, at least, at the ER in the Surgery Area or in a General Practice as Phisicians in some places. Excellent for medicine students in theirs 3rd and 4th years, for residents of surgery specialtys in theirs 1st year.

I purchased this book in the hope that it would help me prepare for my surgical rotation as a third year medical student. It has excellent tutorials on suturing and the basics of flaps. The book is pretty short read but with good illustrations. At our school, we had hands-on instruction at the beginning of our rotation on the basic knots and sutures that as a medical student you would be expected to know. Working with the pig skin and an expert in surgery was the most helpful way to learn the correct way to perform these ties and sutures. This book does a good job of preparing you for suturing and tying before you start your rotation. However, there are also many free resources out there and YouTube videos that are helpful. Just run a search for "suturing" and you'll find many helpful tutorials. I never got around to using the CD-ROMs because I planned on reselling the book so I can't comment on these.

I think while this book is a great resource, for the price of $50 it isn't worth it. There are plenty of free resources and YouTube videos that are just as helpful. That said, the information is put together in a nice introductory fashion so if you are planning on going into surgery, its a nice resource to have before starting the rotation. It will make you look more polished before entering the operating room

The reason I took off a star is the product remains too expensive especially if it is geared toward medical students when most of this information on knot and suturing tying is available on the internet and other resources.

Being prepared for the operating room will give you that extra confidence that will help you win points with your attending. Try and obtain some extra tie material from the scrub techs after a case and practice whenever you have down time.
