Editorial Reviews

J. Roddy Walston and The Business comprising vocalist, guitarist and pianist J, Roddy Walston, lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist and vocalist Logan Davis and drummer Steve Colmus began playing together when Walston moved from the southern church town of Cleveland, Tennessee to Baltimore. They since have earned their fans through what SPIN articulates as "full of spirited and sweaty Southern rock." The band recorded Essential Tremors at Soil Of The South Studios in Georgia with Mark Neill, the Grammy-winning producer and engineer of Black Keys' Brothers and Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit).

If so let me put it to you this way: Do you think you like rock n roll? Do you love rock n roll? Do you think you know rock n roll? If you answer yes than you must know of this band. You can't get much better these days. I can only think of their new labelmates of My Morning Jacket who so highly hold the standard to modern day rock. If you like your Jerry Lee Lewis a little Queen-y or your Little Richard with a bit more Zeppelin than this is the band for you. Essential Tremors finds the Biz exploring greater heights of classic rock and it comes as a more mature effort, maybe a bit more song-oriented than boogie-woogie oriented, but that does not detract from the fun or the quality or the rock. My suggestion is to preview the opening 3 track punch of Heavy Bells > Marigold > Take it as it Comes and see what you are in for. This is by far a band with a future due to the truth that they bring and their roots which are entrenched in rocknroll history and soulfulness.

Oh yeah, and if you can't get enough, go see them live, it's everyhting that church should be.

Musically, this record is fantastic. I have been a J Roddy Walston fan for years. The low review is to reflect the recording quality of the vinyl record. It has a very skinny sound profile, with little in the low range. It sounds as though it is being played through and Ipod hooked up to computer speakers. This is the 2nd J. Roddy Walston record I have purchased and didn't learn my lesson from Hail Mega Boys, which also sounded compressed. The included mp3 download sounds just as good as the vinyl. That is ridiculous.

Seriously, if you don't enjoy the music on this album, I have nothing for you. J Roddy Walston & the Business is THE BUSINESS! This album is pure rock. Having this album will impress girls, friends, other musicians and more. Those in the know, know how hard J Roddy works. They also know the effort and respect the work ethic. That is all aside from the awesome product. The music is what stands out on this album. If you're new to J Roddy or have heard of them and want a starting off point, you can't go wrong with this album. Great starting point for any new fan, a great addition to the collection of any old fan. Great work, awesome rock.

Not the best either. I heard this group on an alternative station and picked the CD. The music was pretty consistent across the board, but I think could have been a little stronger. But that's just me.

Some CDs, as well as albums before that, had just one really killer song and the rest was filler. While that is not the case here, some of the songs, as expected are not as strong as others. That is not to say that they are "throw away" songs - it is a personal preference. I can recommend this CD.

This album rocks from front to back, and there are so many great hooks and melodies that get stuck in your head. J. Roddy's voice is reminiscent of early Kings of Leon, and the songwriting is tight and simple. It reminds me of great rock 'n roll records from the 70s, and the Zeppelin influence is plain for all to hear. Favorite songs: "Black Light," "Sweat Shock," and "Same Days." Check it out!!!

What a great find! But for the Coors Light commercial that used some of one song I never would have heard any of this. Inventive rock that carves its own path, but with a nod to some of the classics (Led Zeppelin, T-ReX

This is my first exposure to J Roddy Walston & the Business and I must say, I am very impressed. Every song on this CD is a gem. This is not one of those CD's where you buy it based on one or two songs that sound pretty good, and then you wind up disappointed at the rest of the disc. Raucous and fun. I plan to buy their other CD's now that I've been so pleasantly rewarded with this one.

I love this cd -- it's one of my top cds of 2013!! J Roddy Walston & the Business are one of the very best acts to see live if you ever get the chance. But in the meantime, I highly recommend this cd. Every song on here is really great, and there's quite a variety in the songs, too -- a lot of crazy good rock 'n' roll, especially. J Roddy reminds me of Jerry Lee Lewis with his wonderful wild piano playing, and he can also play a mean guitar. Love the band, too! They put their hearts and souls into their music, and it's great stuff - you'll be glad you bought it!
