Product Description

There are thousands of typefaces and more being produced monthly. It is a continual challenge for designers to select the exact typeface best suited for a project. In collaboration with the School of St. Martin, Art Center Pasadena, Rhode Island School of Design, Basel, and Yale Design School, 30 Essential Typefaces for a Lifetime defines 30 of the most useful and classic typefaces for all design needs and occasions. Neville Brody imagined "it takes 10 years for someone to master a typeface." This book contains "typefaces for a lifetime."

4.0 out of 5 stars Its all about personal opinion, November 10, 2006
By MMB (NJ) - See all my reviews
When it comes to type faces, sometimes its all about personal opinions and taste. But this book covers the basics and talks about many of the type faces that i use often. It covers some typography history and explains why the typeface was origanlly created, and what the typeface is typically used for. Deffinately an interesting read if you're into typography, but if you're not and just want a type specimen book, then this book isnt for you. I'd have to say the essay "a day w/ out helvetica" was the best part of the book.

a excellent resourse book thats easy to follow and point you in the right directions regarding type. it also has a unique way of pointing where the typeface is best used for. eg helvetica is good to use for display boards becaus of its x-height.etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars 30 Essential Typefaces for a Lifetime-Review, August 17, 2009
By Alicia L. Miller (Marietta, GA) - See all my reviews
This was a handy recommendation from the Typography class I had to take. This book has been used over and over again for other classes and it can be quite quotable by the introductory pages that lead from typeface to typeface. I'm currently working on a newsletter for Layout, "Big Deal?" right?. The teacher is a really experienced Designer who still works in the field as a side job, and to "wow" her takes a lot or just a little when it comes to directly quoting from this text. It clearly states when certain texts should be used, the individual it originated from, and a brief history about them and examples of what the text looks like. Overall, it's very handy and affordable for the price and if I would have bought this one from school (though it wasn't required to have) it would have been a little on the pricey side.
