Know a little, and this book will take you far,

This review is from: Essential Visual C++4 (Essential Series) (Paperback)
If you know a bit about MFC developement and Visual C++, but need a handy reference on how to use a particular control or feature, this is the book to have. Small, concentrated chapters that cover independent topics concisely. Excellent book, IMHO. (Wish he'd update for v6.0 of the compiler!)

I think the book is OK,

I think that the book should have explained more in detail. The book is for people who is advanced with C and knows a little about C++. Not for absolute beginners! The MFC tutorials are ok, it gives you only the basics though. I think the author could have done a lot better job, I think I could even explain it better.

This review is from: Essential Visual C++4 (Essential Series) (Paperback)
i bought this book because this was the cheapest, but what a mistake! it's not a book to learn about C++. it's a one to learn how to use a particular software called visual C++ assuming you are well-versed in C++ language.

Not for newbies, not for experts, hard to follow. :(,

This review is from: Essential Visual C++4 (Essential Series) (Paperback)
This book does not give enough details for MFC, object oriented programming and in general, it is pretty hard to follow. I found it lacking explanation of many small details. It does not explain the basics of C++ very well. In general, it looks like an attempt to put a lot of material into one book. I recommend learning C++ before you try this one out. But again, when you know C++ you could just jump ahead into MFC books..

you could never understand this book as a beginner, and if you are not a beginner, it makes a poor reference.

Not for beginners.,

This book is great, if you already know C++, luckily I did. As an introduction to Visual C++ it's OK. It spent too much time on the AppWizard, instead of showing you how the AppWizard makes applications, it show you how to use the AppWizard to make applications (which it don't go into detail on how to make *your* applications, though). Overall, I'd say it's the AntiChrist for beginners in programming. Not too shabby if you already can program well, but want to learn more about Win95.

Not begginner oriented,
By johnnewbold@sympatico.ca (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Essential Visual C++4 (Essential Series) (Paperback)
I must agree with the other reviewers; as a begginner in programming I found there was not enough info. about many of the steps or procedures. I did spend hours looking and experimenting to find out what the author had casually referred to in one short line of text. In short it was a pretty fustrating bussiness.A true begginer book should of tried to do less in more detail.

Essential Visual C++ 4 Doesn't Deliver,
By A Customer
This review is from: Essential Visual C++4 (Essential Series) (Paperback)
Everything on the outside of this book will lead you to believe that the book is for beginners, from the "New - Casual" User Level to the statement that "No previous C++ experience is assumed." In fact, the book is almost worthless as a tutorial in C++ for even those who have someC programming background. Programming conventions used in the examples are frequently not explained in the accompanying text, nor are explanations available elsewhere in the book. Not recommended |
