Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The Essential Weimaraner The Weimaraner, a picture of grace, speed and stamina, is one of the most distinctive-looking of all breeds with its striking grey coat and light-coloured eyes. Bred in Continental Europe as a multi-purpose hunt, point, retrieve gundog, the Weimaraner has now been adopted worldwide as a effective and dependable working dog, a glamorous show dog, and a loyal family companion. The intelligent Weimaraner has also made its mark in Working Trials. In this highly comprehensive Book of the Breed, the author traces the origins of the Weimaraner and the development of the breed in different parts of the world. There is an in-depth analysis of the Breed Standard, plus useful tips on handling the Weimaraner in the show ring. Practical advice is given on choosing a puppy, training, feeding, and general care, moving on to the more specialized area of breeding and rearing a litter. The working Weimaraner is highlighted with contributions from leading Field Trial Kennels, giving invaluable information on training techniques.

About the Author

Patsy Hollings, a farmer's daughter, grew up surrounded by animals, and was a keen horsewoman, riding competitively. She acquired her first show dog, an English Setter, in 1972, and that was the start of an amazing success story. In partnership with her husband Stephen, Patsy began breeding Weimaraners in 1976 under the Gunalt prefix, and since then they have bred a total of thirteen British Champions, as well as many others overseas. Patsy campaigned the first Weimaraner to win Best in Show at an All Breed Championship Show, and she has now bred a record five different Championship Group winners. In 1993 Patsy and Stephen were runners-up Top Breeder All Breeds in the UK, and in 1994 they won this coveted title. An international Championship Show judge, Patsy is qualified to award CCs in eight Gundog breeds, and she judges the Gundog Group at Championship level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful!, January 19, 2000
This review is from: The Essential Weimaraner (Hardcover)
I purchased this book in preparation for the arrival of our new puppy, and had read it twice through by the time he arrived. This book has been a real blessing in helping us to understand our little guy's personality, temperament and ways. It has been helpful in getting us through the first days of "crate training"(ugh!) by reminding us that we will be thankful that we did this later! It even helped me to converse intelligently with the breeder about Weimaraner Standards and I even had a sense of what to look for in our puppy that might indicate his ultimate quality as an adult. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is contemplating the addition of a Weim to the family!

Going by the reviews for this book on this site I thought this was a must have book as I am considering getting a Weimaraner puppy. This book is not for someone like me. I am looking for info that a pet owner who spayeds and neuters all their pets would need. This book does not fill that bill. It covers history of the breed, standards and so on... Only two chapters could I use and due to the fact the Author is British and so uses British terms which I found some what confusing. If you plan to get a Weimaraner for a pet and don't wish to add to the population by breeding, don't plan to show for conformation, or want a history lesson close to Biblical terms, then get a book I found very useful and very informativ. A New Owners Guide To Weimaraners by Judythe Coffman, it's easier to read, very informative esp. the diet and I will keep it handy for my puppy.I really hate the fact I spent over $20 for this book and can't use it, good things about on-line buying is savings, bad thing is sending back and hoping you get your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - Aimed at Breeders, October 12, 2000
By
Miss April J Williams (Emsworth, Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Essential Weimaraner (Hardcover)
I am thinking of taking on a weimaraner for the first time. I live in the UK and am planning on an older dog, one needing to be rehomed. I ordered this book thinking it would be full of useful facts for a 'novice' such as myself. However, it was smaller in size than I had expected, and was not easy to read due to design. Content was made up mostly of history (deep stuff most people would not need to know), and lists of breeders/bloodlines. Useful to potential breeders but disappointing for myself. Especially since I had waited so long to receive it. Would get my money back if that were possible. £20 sterling is a lot for such a book.
