Good overview of the wireless world,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
As someone new to wireless technology, I found this book very helpful. It explains what all the buzzwords like 3G and m-commerce actually MEAN, and left me understanding a lot mroe about the industry than before. I particularly liked the chapter on how 3G works, because it had a lot of detailed info without being overwhelming. There's actually quite a lot of technical details throughout the book, yet it's still readable. You can read it almost from cover to cover as an introduction to the topic, then keep it as a reference later.

A little of everything,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
Explains what lies behind most of the hype about 3G and mobile Internet, plus a lot more like MMDS that I hadn't heard of before. Don't expect it to turn you into an expert on wireless overnight, but it will bring you up to speed on the technology.

Insightful and balanced perspectives on wireless technology,
By angyh@singnet.com.sg (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
The writing of such a book inevitably involves balancing between the amount of detail provided and the level of accessibility for the average layman; in my opinion, the author manages this remarkably well. Almost everything that spans the gamut of wireless technology is covered, apart from technically involved topics, yet the conciseness of the text allows the reader to have a good grasp of the relevant issues within a short time. What makes this book stand out though is the refreshing insight into various aspects of the technology offered by the author; the preface says that "it is designed to look beyond the hype", and from what is written you can tell that the author knows what he is talking about.I will definitely be looking out for a second edition and other works by Andy Dornan.

Interesting and Useful,
By K Donnovan (Baltimore, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
A helpful introduction to wireless and mobile systems, and the things you can do with them. It covers both the technology and the economics, and is generally well-written. It isn't really an engineering manual or a users' guide for your cell phone, but then it doesn't claim to be.

This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
Mr. Dornan explains in a very easy -to-understand way all the wireless technologies. This is an excellent introduction book and, at the same time, a complete reference guide.

This book gives an excellent, clear picture of the state of things. I work for a small agresive company in the Telecommunications field and I give copies to the sales staff so they know what we are selling and also to development staff so they have some context of what they are trying to build. Clear and Useful Introduction to Wireless,
By Beki Grinter (Atlanta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
This book is a clear and useful, very useful, introduction to the wireless space. I found that this book introduced me to technical terms, standards, and business concepts I had sometimes heard about before, but the author lays out the details in a very clear and detailed manner. For example, this book helped me to understand 3G much better. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a much better overview of the wireless space.

Cynical but optimistic,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
The writer seems to have a very low opinion of most companies and their business plans, but that's probably realistic. He is more excited about the way wireless will revolutionise our lives, and opportunities for new players.

Excellent introduction to wireless comms,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
Good intro for people who know nothing about wireless and mobile technology. There's also some more technical material that a complete beginner to computers might have problems with, but better to have too much than too little.

This review is from: The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications, From Cellular Systems to WAP and M-Commerce (Paperback)
This is a good introductory text into the mobile/cellular space. Has a decent discussion about the various technologies. The title is a bit misleading, the book does not provide an indepth discussion of applications such as setting up SMS, ring-tones, wireless games etc. All the smae, its a good read for a beginer
