5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, December 1, 2005
This review is from: Essentially Naked (Audio CD)
i've been an avid fan of Bif Naked since i first heard "spaceman" on Much Music. her style, talent and natural beauty have since captivated me, and she has yet to disappoint. Bif is uncompromising, her lyrics are personal; she speaks from her perspective, most of them deep with angst and feelings of betrayal, but others forgiving but not forgetting. this is a great collection of her work, its a time span of 10 years of her music. i would call it the definitive collection of what Bif Naked is musically [hence the title, 'Essentially Naked'] and well, it comes with videos for singles. its a great deal, what more can you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Is Bif Naked ready for a Best Of collection already??? Why the hell not!!, August 16, 2005
This review is from: Essentially Naked (Audio CD)
Bif Naked has so far peaked in the US with her astounding Punk/Pop masterpiece I Bifficus(1998) And then faded back to Canadian obscurity after the release of Purge(2001), but listening to this carefully constructed non-sequential selection of Bif's various singles and poems from her first three albums(and various in betweens) justifies the need to highlight Bif at her best.

It's interesting to figure out what Bif was trying to be when she first exploded onto the scene with her debut lp from 1994(either a teenage punky lesbian in "Everything"; an alterna-queen on "Daddy's Getting Married" and "My Bike"; a pop princess on "My Whole Life").

But listening to her rocking I Bifficus tracks, it's easy to see why this Mare has made such an impact in her hometown of Canada. "Moment Of Weekness" and "Twitch" are classic Bif attitude with their high energy punk likeabilities, while "Chotee" follows the same mantra with a more personal and dark touch. As good a song as "Lucky" is, it makes you wonder if that was just Bif's attempt at mainstream success.

When Purge came around in 2001, Bif tries a more universal approach to the rock genre, releasing high energy party anthems like "I Love Myself Today"; bubbly punk/pop like "Tango Shoes", as well as more mainstream tracks like "Choaking On The Truth" and "Leader".

Bif's personality comes through the most in the well-spoken poems that appear throughout this compilation, the devil seems to be a common theme. And the newer tracks, "Rich and Filthy" and "Back In The Day" are as infectious and fun as any of the other singles. The BIG bonus is the special DVD that comes with this collection, including 14 videos that just don't dissapoint. If you're a Music video nut(like myself) than the DVD alone is worth the purchase!

Overall, take a sample of I Love Myself Today, Moment Of Weakness, Everything, or My Satan Poem and if you enjoy any of those tracks, this set may find a happy home in your collection.

"Essentially Naked" is a very good music compilation. I never owned any of her earlier studio cds so I can't say it will have everyone's favorites, but I think it is probably a pretty good overview of her music. I was really only familiar with a couple of her songs - "Twitch" and "A Moment Of Weakness". This compilation has both of them. I am pleased to say there is also a dvd of her videos. The dvd is not anamorphic but plays in my region one dvd player. It works best in 4x3 ratio. If you are going to buy some Bif Naked, this is a good place to start. Don't let her name scare you too much. Thanks

I've been a huge fan of Bif Naked ever since I heard "Lucky" on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack. Since then I've bought pretty much every album she's done. Like my title says this is an absolute must have for any Biffy fan. Ever since I ordered Essentially Naked it has not left my car's CD case. Not only does the CD include most of my favorite tracks but it also introduced me to a few that I had not heard before. And how can you go wrong with a DVD of all her music videos? Best tracks for me: Rich and Filthy, Everything,& Lucky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this aboard the Time Capsule right now!, June 15, 2010
This review is from: Essentially Naked (Audio CD)
I was going through a strange phase when I picked up this excellent CD/DVD combo from Bif Naked. At the time I was interested almost to a fault only in CD's that were enhanced. Meaning usually a hit video from the audio tracks was included. It had to be that way nothing less but with this you get 13 great videos + 22 audio tracks ( including a couple of remixes)it doesn't get any better then this. What I find a bit strange is nowhere in the liner notes or the back of the case do you see mention of a DVD though I do seem to recall a sticker was on the plastic that mentioned it. It makes you wonder if adding the DVD was a last minute decision as it was not all that common then. However it came to be the songs & videos from 94 to 2001 are superb. If you are not familiar with Bif Naked I would compare the video & sound to No Doubt (prior to Gwen breaking up & going solo)& the time frame was close ( though I believe the No Doubt hits started a few years earlier). There's also some interesting pearls of wisdom from Bif Naked accompanied by cartoony type drawings in the fold out insert. Pictures as well are included. Really everything but the kitchen sink is in this package except for the lyrics & even that is addressed in the version I bought, Wow!. If you are at all like me & you purchase an entertainment item often after a quick viewing ,it gets treated 2 ways. First if it's just okay it quickly end up with other stuff lying around. On the other hand if it's really special you carry it around contantly in your house or apartment. This falls in the latter category ( at least for me) & I think for you as well. One last warning, women don't be put off by the title "Essentially Naked" this is solid rock & you've probably already enjoyed some of these hits without realising who the artist was. This collection is solid gold, 5 stars without hesitation & worth whatever you have to pay for it.

Bif Naked is an awesome underated artist in my opinion. All of her albums are good but this is a good collection. Some of the tracks on here differ from their original album releases. Highly recommended along with all her other albums.
