5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect as an introduction book!
The book is required in our class of Finance as an introduction to the accounting system. It's quite easy to understand all the principles by doing the exercises yourself. And the special design of reverse printing and post tests are a big help. I had accounting class before and was often confused with debits and credits of whatever assets or liablities and equity...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner, Save your $ if you know any accounting
I bought this book in order to review prior to heading off to business school this fall. I majored in finance as an undergrad which involved two accounting classes. This limited background made this book of limited use as it was very basic in nature. If you have any accounting background, I would recommend you save your money and purchase a more advanced text. The book is required in our class of Finance as an introduction to the accounting system. It's quite easy to understand all the principles by doing the exercises yourself. And the special design of reverse printing and post tests are a big help. I had accounting class before and was often confused with debits and credits of whatever assets or liablities and equity. However, when I'm doing this book, everything is clear - there's considerable details to explain how to debit or credit any accounts. Simple introduction of non-profit organizations' financial statement also quite useful. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner, July 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Essentials of Accounting (Paperback)
This book is perfect for a person who has a general understanding of bookkeeping but wants to know more about accounting. It makes a good review for a person who uses financial statements but does not prepare them. It is a workbook, so the reader answers questions on each page. This encourages retention of information.

I used this book in a analyst training program in Wall Street. It is an excellent summary of Accounting 001. Clear, short and precise for people who want to grasp relatively quickly the topic.

I routinely use accounting in my investing activities as well as my management activities and I have found this to be among the most insightful short accounts out there. Plenty of detail is provided and the programmed teaching format is highly effective. Although simple in its approach, it also has one of the best overall approaches to accounting that I have seen. Most accounting books make it difficult to see the forest for the trees. This book is just the opposite: it starts by showing you the forest. Highly recommended to those who need a good knowledge of accounting but do not wish to become accountants.

I bought this book in order to review prior to heading off to business school this fall. I majored in finance as an undergrad which involved two accounting classes. This limited background made this book of limited use as it was very basic in nature. If you have any accounting background, I would recommend you save your money and purchase a more advanced text. This one took me approximately 4 hours to get through.

That being said, this book is fantastic for anyone with a limited accounting background. It is concise, well-written, and does a good job of explaining the basic concepts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, but with a point, August 15, 2001

With no accounting background, I picked this book up prior to entering my first accounting class. This book is laid out as something of a workbook. It will describe or define something and then ask you to fill in the blank with the concept learned several times. The book progressively builds on the material it has covered, linking concepts together. At the end of every chapter is a review section. It moves from the most fundamental to the more advanced. Overall, a very good book. Be warned, it starts off painfully slowly, but picks up steam a few chapters in. A good book for someone who knowns nothing about accounting and financial statements and wants a basic understanding of how accounting views/treats things and of how financial statements articulate with one another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great learning Tool, March 6, 2000
This review is from: Essentials of Accounting (Paperback)
I purchased this book as a way to learn about financial statements. My previous knowledge was only that of knowing what a balance sheet looked like, but not what it actually told me. This book took me from only having very limited knowledge of the accounting world, to feeling competent in discussing financials with my peers.

This guide is an excellent teaching medium. Instead of reading page after page of text, the author engages the reader in answering questions and conducting drills to apply the material. Accounting is one of the subjects that you can learn more about each time you cycle through the material. I'd had an accounting course as part of my MBA program, and have read a couple of traditional accounting textbooks and this book really helped me understand how the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows are interrelated. This is a good book for busy professionals that don't have time to take an accounting course. I spent two hours on each chapter, for a total of 22 hours. The book is expensive, but worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have to learn accounting, try this book., March 9, 2002

I needed a crash-course in accounting prior to starting my MBA. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I wasn't completely clueless on my first day of class. It was also a valuable reference tool throughout school, and a great way to prepare for final exams.

Learning accounting can be tough, but this book helps make it bearable.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOURCE FOR TEACHING & LEARNING, September 28, 2000
By

Another book purchased to have in our office library for management and my assistant who is taking classes to become a certified accountant. She was excited to receive this book for it helped her understand some of the terms and questions not plainly spelled out in her accounting class. I found the review of this book to benefit myself as a refresher course. I plan to have our President, who is unwilling to learn accounting principles, read over this book to help him better understand the importantance of good financial practices. He thinks accounting is the least important part of his business. What will it take to have him be willing to learn? Hopefully this book will give him an easy way of learning without being over the top of his ability to understand accounting is very important. I think it will. No doubt about it. You will be glad to have this book in your library of accounting materials for home or business practices.
