4.0 out of 5 stars
Somewhat dated, but truly "essential.", August 5, 1998
This review is from: The Essentials of Beer Style: A Catalog of Classic Beer Styles for Brewers and Beer Enthusiasts (Paperback)
This is one of the first, most useful books for someone who really wants to learn about beer. It is not fancy. There are no pretty photos of beer or breweries, the writing is to-the-point without much in the way of entertainment. But the information is rich and authoritative. When my friends have sucked Michael Jackson's books dry, and still want more, want to know how to understand the beer they are drinking, this is the book I recommend. Note that I do NOT lend them my copy; I would not want to be without it. The only reason I give the book 4 stars is because it is somewhat out of date. Fred: NEW EDITION!!

Eckhardt's book is definitive, seminal., August 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essentials of Beer Style: A Catalog of Classic Beer Styles for Brewers and Beer Enthusiasts (Paperback)
I first obtained a draft of this work in 1986. Eckhardt was the first author to compile modern, quantitative analyses of the world's recognized beer styles. The work has guided me from novice homebrewer to professional brewer; its accuracy and reliability are without equal. There is no other single , comprehensive source of parametric data of the world's beer styles.
Beware of anyone , reviewer or otherwise, who disparages the works of Jackson or Eckhardt, or who views favorably the work of Klein. Check Eckhardt's or Jackson's references with Campaign for Real Ale, the Association of Brewers, The Institute for Brewing Studies, the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, or the Association of Brewing Chemists, or any decent brewer within reach.
This is a technical work, on a par with Fix and Noonan, and equally essential to the serious brewer.

Classic Reference for Brewers and Serious Beer Enthusiasts, August 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Essentials of Beer Style: A Catalog of Classic Beer Styles for Brewers and Beer Enthusiasts (Paperback)
Eckhardt's Essentials features a comprehensive list of specifications for classic beers, some useful formulae, a glossary of beer terminology and a section on appreciating and judging beer. The catalog of beer specs is invaluable for the micro/pub/homebrewer. Someone looking for a basic guidebook to beer would probably be better served by Michael Jackson's Pocket Guide, but every serious beer lover/professional Should have a copy of Essentials of Beer Style.
