I read this entire book at one sitting. Once you get past the initial history it is a great all around summary of bonsai. I thought there was alot of good information for beginners. It lacked in the soil selection, but more than made up for it in other sections. It also had alot of good pictures.

The Essentials of Bonsai covers everything from classification of styles to prune and shape. There is an introduction by Donald Richie explaining the history. And tons of photos done in black and white and color. And some masterpiece example of Bonsai plants.
